The science is indisputable: man-made climate change has melted icecaps and warmed the oceans, causing 8 inches of sea rise on average globally. Those higher sea levels cause a lot of damage, as we saw in Florida and Texas recently. Oil companies made a product that ultimately causes a lot of damage.

There is no way to prove that it was the fault of the oil companies exclusively. Maybe California can sue the dairy farmers, too, and claim global warming is caused by cow farts.
Is there anyone California hasn't sued for some silly reason?
What would the effects of a successful lawsuit be?
For starters people that purchase oil and gas products which is everyone could expect to pay more. The 75K people that work for Exxon could expect there $100K+ salary to be reduced substantially. The primary stakeholder in Exxon which is pension funds including California will see their dividend evaporate.
What would the effects of a successful lawsuit be?
Higher gas and oil prices if oil companies have to start paying damages, which will further encourage the adoption of green and renewable energy. Which is a good thing. It would be a lot less messy if instead of these lawsuits we had a carbon tax, which could accomplish the same thing if those revenues helped pay for disasters that are made worse by AGW. But Congress has no interest in a carbon tax so it's off to court they go.

Let's see these fools outlaw all petroleum products in their cities.
They won't because they know they are full of #%€< and would burn baby seal blood in their cars if needed.
What a bunch of full blown retards.
