The guy drove 1400 miles for a temporary $10 an hour job? That doesn't make any sense and the daily commute must be killing him..?
There are cases where older people want to keep working and there are cases where they have to.
I know older people that lost a bundle in the recession and they are still working. I know others that work because they cannot afford health insurance.
Still there are others who made terrible choices throughout their lives and they have nothing to fall back on in their old age so they have to keep working.
There is a real problem in this country that people are ignoring, there are too many people and not enough jobs but we continue to support and embrace illegal aliens by the millions. What is going to happen to that guy cleaning up the campground for $10 an hour when a illegal alien that was just given amnesty comes along and is willing to do the work for $9 ?
What could possibly go wrong ?
I have seen this , Men leaving family to work in another state taking rooms with other workers and cooking on grills allowed by the hotel. They have to work to survive.
The realization that retirement needs to be taken in installments is coming to many a younger person now.
There are no guarantees that one will act responsibly, prudently amass an adequate retirement portfolio then automatically maintain good health to enjoy it.
Taking the opportunity to enjoy travel and recreation throughout your working years occasions the ability for one to sit on the porch of the retirement home with a full diaper that's needed changing for a couple of hours and still maintain a smile using the memories accumulated, not postponed.
Foregoing trading in the paid for 4 year old Dodge Caravan on a new 4X4 Quad Cab pick-up you use primarily for commuting on paved roads to instead, take the family on a Portugal vacation ....... staying in the paid for 1800 sq/ft., three bedroom bungalow instead of buying the 2800 sq/ft McMansion with the mortgage up the ying yang......renting a boat for the occasional weekend on the lake instead of buying one to languish in your driveway unused for months at a time......all decisions considered with an end goal but one that affords occasional larger quality moments to cherish forever.
A quality retirement can be attained but should not be done at the expense of putting ALL your eggs in that basket.

Your view seems strange living in a place such as Cape Cod. The Cape has a very high percentage of retirees. It also has a booming tourist industry yet can't get enough people to fill its jobs. CC has used a lot of foreign visa workers to fill these positions in the past but the new restrictions have eliminated much of that. Jobs are now going unfilled. It would therefore not seem that there too many people on Cape Cod and too few jobs. Reality says just the opposite.

I did that something like that. I had a job that I commuted to on Monday morning and didn't come home until Friday night. I did that for 2 years.

I wouldn`t generalize like that. Most people here in Western Pa. have never seen an illegal alien and the problem is the same. America has never "embraced" aliens be they legal or illegal.

It is true that on Cape we need more workers in the Summer due to the swell of tourists and plenty of old folks chip in. I know semi retired people who move out of their house in Summer so they can reap the high rental their house gets . It helps them to pay the bills and it is known as Yankee Ingenuity or getting the job done.
This past Summer we had plenty of foreign workers despite the crackdown on the J1 visas. The J1 kids are not illegal aliens they are students that come to work and have a fun experience then they go back home. Most of them speak English very well and they work hard.
The thing is that many of these jobs that the J1 kids take and the ones that the semi retired folks have are not jobs that could support a family. They are supplemental jobs in retail and food service.
Meanwhile not far off Cape there are many qualified people looking for too few jobs that can support a life style.
That is the reality.

That is good that the illegal problem has not affected Western Pa. but I have seen people here in Mass. that have really been hurt by them. I have seen legal immigrants lose their business's to their fellow countrymen that are here illegally.
One needs to only look toward the Sanctuary cities policy to understand that illegal aliens are being embraced.
I don't want to hijack this thread by going on about illegal aliens but they are a problem.
If I could get back on track and make another "generalization" Older folks have what the young often lack and that is a work ethic, loyalty and years of experience.
Back on track OP .
