Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1937. It was a political manuver.

Alaska, Hawaii, South Dakota and Vermont do not recognize it.
South Dakota calls it Native American Day. Alabama combined Columbus Day and American Indian Heritage Day.

Municipalities have been replacing it with Indigenous Peoples Day for the past 25 years.

Most non- government businesses do not observe the holiday.

While the Federal Reserve is closed, some banks are open as is the stock market.

Columbus did not discover North America and never set foot on North Anerica. He landed on islands in the Bahamas and what we now call Hispaniola. His crew raped, pillaged and murdered island inhabitants.

Maybe it should be named " Mass Murderer Day".

In my town we are replacing it with, "Yea Columbus Was Bad But Were It Not For Him None Of Us Would Here And Doing What We Are Doing Day."

Indians in the US raped, pillaged and murdered each other yet we're now going to "celebrate" them ?

Lets face it these Holidays like Columbus day, Labor day, Presidents day, Memorial day and Veterans day have lost their meaning and should now be called what they are for many a day off from work.

Heck even Christmas and Easter are not what they used to be and Independence day celebrations for next year are being put on hold until people stop complaining about the country and start getting along.

My company decided to give us Veterans Day off instead of Colombus day. So I work on Monday and that's fine with me
