Early 1980's: the liberal congress directed the Social Security Administration to pare the SSI and SSDI rolls. Social Security administrators responded by developing definitions of mental illness that diverged from those used in the past and those employed by mental health professionals. The resulting dislocations ultimately produced a public outcry that compelled the administration and Social Security to back down.
1981: The 1981 the Democrat controlled congress passed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act which repealed the provisions of the National Mental Health Systems Act, cut federal mental health and substance abuse allocations by twenty-five percent, and converted them to block grants disbursed with few strings attached. New York State, which used block-grant monies to fund community-based programs, and other states have to cut mental health programs.
1979 in Texas and around the country, state governments got this brilliant idea to close the state hospitals for being "inhumane" in favor of opening neighborhood outpatient centers. What they really wanted to do was take that money and blow it on their pet projects. All neighborhoods said not in our backyard. So you have mental patients on the street. Which incidentally indirectly affected Reagan personally when John Hinckley shot him.
Mayor Dianne Feinstein (now a us senator) gathered religious leaders together in 1982 to discuss a shocking wave of homeless people on city streets.
The solution, they thought, was to temporarily set up cots and soup kitchens in a few church basements.
What they didn't realize then was they faced the genesis of a generational crisis brought on by complicated social factors out of their control.
At the time, Feinstein said, she thought homelessness was only a temporary problem, and the solution was to provide short-term housing. Her attention was also split with the emerging AIDS epidemic.

The problem with the mentally ill is that there really isn't some magic drug or treatment plan that will cure them all. They might decide they don't like some side effect of the drugs they were given and stop taking them. Or they might decide they like some of the street drugs better or in addition and make themselves worse.

why are you and other liberals sticking this on the republicans? since liberals CAUSED the problem, they should at least step up and offer solutions to the problem. but being typical liberals they are creating a problem to blame someone else because they cannot take responsibility for their OWN actions.

Reagan cut a ton of Mental health budgets and didn't fund AIDS research either in the 1980's (they're just Gays).
As for Hinckley shooting him apparently Gun rights were more important back then and still today hence the Vegas massacre but go ahead and keep trying to blame liberals for gun violence.

When anti-psychotic medications were developed, they allowed many who lived in institutions to live in the community with support from community mental health centers.
Reagan's Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act repealed Carter's community health legislation in favor of block grants to states.
These block grants then got siphoned off into other endeavors.
Ask any parent of an adult child with serious psychiatric problems about the struggles they encounter in getting mental health treatment and care for them. Our veterinarian's son killed three people and himself during a mental health episode. For years, our vet had begged for help, all to no avail.
Finding a bed in a inpatient psychiatric facility is a challenge and a staggering number of people who belong in long-term psychiatric facilities end up in prison instead.
North and South Dakota place teens who need mental health treatment in facilities in Minnesota. When they turn 18, the funding runs out and the kids are told not to bother coming back home as there are no services.
"Greyhound therapy" is widely practiced throughout the country. Anyone with any serious mental health condition who indicates even the slightest interest in another state is sent packing.
Nevada was sued over it. For years, they literally drove people to the bus station, gave them a sack lunch, and sent them on their way.

Well this time around, the NRA threw us a crumb right? They admitted that allowing bump stock mods to create automatic weapons might not be such a hot idea. Of course the reason they said that is that it does not affect the bottom line of the firearms industry to any great extent. What about banning semi-autos, which is the real solution long term? They will never go there because there are billions and billions of blood stained dollars to be made on that product.
As far as health care for the mentally ill, why would they care about that? Their preferred solution for every "problem" always comes at high velocity from the muzzle of a firearm, owned and operated by one of their New American Patriots.
