Hmm, Trump sends out a tweet. Okay then, were you as upset with the Obama administration and the DOJ in 2013 when they went after the AP and the Washington Post issuing subpoenas, search warrants and court orders to obtain records or information from journalists?
Just asking.
You mean when they were looking for leakers? Not one bit. How about you?
But that is just a red herring - Trump openly trying to threaten a network's license (whether its in his power to do to or not) is a step WAY over the line.
Why can't he quit being a snowflake and learn to deal with criticism? I mean its not like some well-known crackpot is running around telling the media he was not even born in the USA!
POTUS appoints the board and the chair, 3 members from his party.
The board can tweak the rules. Remember when the Fairness Doctrine and the Equal Time rule vanished? That gave Rush Limbaugh, Glen Beck and all the rest all they needed.
The US president tweeted on Wednesday: "Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a 'tenfold' increase in our US nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!"
In a follow-up tweet, he said: "With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!"
If NBC is deliberately lying and making up news and engaging in libel, them its license should be pulled. Media lies are not protected. I hope Trump follows through, but he probably won't as it would not be worth his time.
I believe with a broadcasting license comes a requirement to meet certain standards. That is obviously what he is referring to. You must meet those standards or you may lose your license. That isn't something Trump just made up yesterday. FCC rules have been in existence since the first radio station was licensed.
Trump is walking a very dangerous path with these kind of public statements.
I love it when people cite the Constitution, but don't understand or apparently haven't even read the part they cite.
What part of the US Constitution does not give the goverment authority to limit what goes out on the licensed broadcast spectrum? This would include obscene material, threats, and of course fake news presented as truth.
In fact the 1st Amendment protects, specifically the free press, ONLY IF they are reporting the news instead of making it up.
