Basement dweller usually refers to a grown kid who never left their parents home. They din't pay rent and mommy cooks their meals and does their laundry.
I had to move in with my parents once after I got laid off. I paid rent and soon moved into a housesitting situation where I got free rent while I looked for a new job
Living rent free with your parents implies that you are a moocher, not grown up enough to take care of yourself.
Because there’s a ton of neck-bearded incels out there whom easily take offense being called basement- dwellers?
It might have to do with the fact that there’s a huge overlap between self-proclaimed “incels” and living in one’s parent’s basement. It doesn’t hurt that they have fragile egos massive self-persecution complexes...
Well, I have a house but often dream about a van down by the river. Maybe a big cargo van or a cube van might be kinda nice for a while. You could put solar panels on the top and have a battery backup, insulate the walls and put in a propane stove for cooking vittles on.
Basements are nice, but I'm more of a bunker man. They are so quiet, the neighbors could never disturb you with their dogs, boom boom music, loud machinery, ect ect. They take very little to heat and cool. I would want a heavy steel front door, and radon/poison gas detector.
Other options other than my parents basement, termite mounds are a marvel of insect engineering, why are there none of those on the rental market. I also like the pineapple under the sea concept from Spongebob. Yes, he likes grandma's cookies, but he has a job and lives in his own pineapple next to a really good neighbor, Squidward. I wouldn't want to deal with the stinging jellyfish problem, however.
A grown kid who never leaves home often moves down in the basement where there's more privacy and room. The same goes for an adult who has to move back in with Mom and Dad after years of living on their own.
It's sometimes mooching, and other times, humiliating. I'm sure there are some adults who would much prefer living in a van down by the river than moving back in with Mom and Dad. That's a great defeat for anyone who has been independent and on their own for a while.
So for me, the term basement dweller is someone who has been defeated and has given up. But not happily. There's a lot of depression, resentment, anger, and denial that comes along with a big defeat in life.
A friend of ours recently died of a heart attack at the age of 58. He never lived alone, married, traveled, partied, bought fancy cars, but lived in his parents house in the bedroom he grew up in.
Loser? Snowflake? He was worth 10 Million dollars when he died. His 84 year old widowed Dad will be well taken care of for the rest of his life; as will his two heir brothers.
I noticed it being used more and more often by successful socialite-type people whenever their power is even the slightest bit threatened. As someone who lives with their parents and is pocketing lots of money living rent free, I have no idea why many in America look down on that.
Living with Mommy and Daddy = no growth moving out and being independent = growth. Questions? BTW, growth is good.
