The statue of John C. Breckinridge has already been removed, and the statue of John Hunt Morgan is now being moved from their location in front of the old Fayette County Courthouse.

Earlier today, the Attorney General of Kentucky ruled that the removal is strictly up to the city of Lexington. It was thought that a State Military Heritage Commission would have to approve the move. However, it was determined that while former Mayor Theresa Isaac had recommended to the City Council that authority be transferred to the State Commission in 2003, the Council never voted on it. Therefore, the AG ruled that the State Historical Commission had no jurisdiction and the removal of the statues remained within the power of the local government.

The current plan is to move the statues to the Lexington Cemetary, where both Breckinridge and Morgan are buried. No further information on the eventual disposition of the statues has been released.

Excuse me while I stand and cheer for the removal of another national stain from our publicly owned spaces.

*cheers*

But not to worry, the proud descendants of our country's slave owners will never let their lost cause be forgotten...

Shoot why stop there... just get rid of, destroy, hide anything that offends anyone. It seems to be the trend lately!

Good move. That is an appropriate place for them.

Eh, as long as they leave the Secretariat statue that is in the Kentucky Horse Park and Belmont Park alone, I don't care what they do with all other statues. But of course, Secretariat is a magnificent American hero, who broke records and soared hearts where ever he galloped, but he did represent the "sport of kings", which only the most wealthiest at the time could partake. His owner was a woman though, so maybe the SJW will leave him a lone.

I think it is to the city to decide if they want to keep them in place or move them. Hopefully the gathered input from the citizens.
