"Citing emergency powers, President Donald Trump signed an executive order late in the day on Friday that would allow retired military pilots to be recalled to active duty.
But the broad wording of the executive order seemed to imply that the executive branch would have the power to call up retired military officers and force them back into service for any reason, as the “emergency” Trump used to justify the executive order was extremely vague: “the continuing and immediate threat of further attacks on the United States.”
Why? What's the "emergency?" I have the disquieting notion that Trump will cause an "emergency."
Or maybe he is just looking out for our country and what is best for it if something happens... like some wacko nut job over in Asia wanting to shoot missiles at us.
Don't you think it would be smart that IF something did happen, that we would have a reserve force of experienced pilots on hand, even if they had to be brought from retirement.
Personally, I don't think it would be necessary to draft them though, as if something major happened that would require that draft to be implemented, I'd imagine it would be a situation in which we would be under attack and I would think we'd have a volunteer force rivaling that of WW2 after Pearl Harbor.
The military has been suffering a shortage of pilots for years. Are you upset that we finally have a president doing something about it? Yes, I understand that Obama refused to act for 8 years. And yes, I realize that by actually addressing the issue, Trump continues to make Obama look like a bumbling incompetent. Is that, perhaps, what you're upset about?
There is a pilot shortage for a variety of reasons but mostly because of budget cuts. The issue is exacerbated because they can't simply replace them with new pilots that take quite a while to train.
Actually; a recent behavioural assessment specialist was engaged to perform a profile work-up of Air Force One pilots and they ascertained that all of them, and their next stream alternates, were overwhelmed with the subliminal desire to fly the thing into Mount Rushmore while Trump was aboard.
They need more pilots to test for unexpressed but latent self destructive desires.
The pilots knew when they signed up for military service they could be called back if they met the necessary parameters. My uncle who fought nearly the entire island campaign in the Pacific as a front line combat Marine. He rose to the rank of Sergeant then was called back in full retirement for the Korean conflict as a Drill Instructor. He had his own business, and several children by this time. They had to move in with relatives during this time.
I didn't read those links but this is being done under special provision Congress granted Bush after 9/11 that was never rescinded.

(c) Recall to active duty
A commissioned officer, retired for reasons other than for failure of promotion to the senior grade, may (1) if an officer of the Regular Corps or an officer of the Reserve Corps entitled to retired pay under subsection (a), be involuntarily recalled to active duty during such times as the Commissioned Corps constitutes a branch of the land or naval forces of the United States, and (2) if an officer of either the Regular or Reserve Corps, be recalled to active duty at any time with his consent.
