Big govt federal social programs such Social Security, food stamps and welfare have become dependent on the money changing crony capitalist/corporitist welfare state. This makes much more difficult and risk laden for the middle class to be sustainable financially secure without being a part of wall st crony corporatism in one way or another than it should be.
Socialism is based on constantly transferring earnings to others, whether they have earned them or not. Socialism is actually trickle down economics via crony-capitalism.
Ignorant liberals with socialist leanings like to say that paved roads and public schools are forms of socialism when they are not. They are merely services that are provided on a local city and town state level funded by the budgets of the respective places through tax revenue of the citizens themselves in the areas that are served. This is not socialism at all. Socialism is based on security blankets that were bought with other people's earnings who may possibly never have to use them or feel the effects of them on a local level. It doesn't make sense if you live in Minnesota to have to buy the citizens of Alabama security blankets, nor should they have to buy you yours.
When you get to the Federal level that is when it starts to become socialism and the problems of unaccountability start to happen. It becomes taxation without representation and this creates dysfunctional socialistic government. The bigger the population that uses principles of the crony capitalist/socialist welfare model, the more chance that adverse effects will occur such as corruption and deficits. This has been happening exponentially to the country for decades.
Look at a place like Cuba or North Korea, they may call themselves socialist but are full of crony-capitalism which funds their socialist models. There is also very much corruption. These are small nations who able to perpetuate their money changing as opposed to large and heavily populated cities and states in the U.S. who continually run out of other peoples's money with their socialist crony-capitalist welfare models.
The people who continually push for more socialism in the U.S. are inadvertently or possibly even consciously and nefariously pushing for a more crony-capitalistic/corporitist welfare state and are very dangerous to the economy in general.
For every cause there are adverse effects, Crony Capitalism and Corporatism are the adverse effects of all types of socialistic and welfare bail-out policies the U.S. has ever created, like it or not. Investing in stocks has become nothing more than investing in crony capitalism.

Corporatism is another word for fascism; the merging of the state and corporation - a long-favored goal of the far right, and the next thing after that they want is a feudal state where rich barrons decide how things will be run.

I could have stopped reading at "Socialism is based on transferring earnings to others." Thats not really true. It's not about earning; it's about capital. Socialism advocates for socialized ownership of industry. Welfare economics is a purely liberal/capitalist invention, done to appease socialists who felt capitalism was treating workers unfairly.
The reason I could have stopped there is because everything else hinges on this incorrect exploration of socialism. You say public schools are not socialist, and welfare is. Now, I actually agree that public education is not socialist, but it's a hell of a lot closer to being socialist than welfare is. Welfare, if you know the history (and you don't; I don't need to ask to make sure), was started by people who weren't socialists who wanted to enact policy that would prevent workers from becoming socialists. Otto Von Bismarck is generally credited with establishing the first modern welfare state. He was no a socialist. Not even close.

Let me ask you this, what does it say for the state of Michigan, which is very close to some very big lakes, that it can't even get safe drinking water to its residents in the 21st century?
