Trump knows that the coal miners are suckers. He knows that the coal miners will support him even if the jobs don’t come back.
Trump can spot a sucker a mile away and he knows how to play them; that’s how he got rich.
Maybe calling the miners suckers is a bit harsh? When times are tough and people are in a situation where they are grasping at straws, they might have the feeling that they have nothing to lose. In their eyes, it didn't look like Hillary was going to do much for them
There's still going to be the massive imbalance between Wyoming and Appalachian coal. If the regs are lifted, Wyoming coal will still be more economically viable. Lifting regs won't suddenly make Appalachian coal more desirable when there's billions of tons left in Wyoming that's super easy to mine compared to Appalachian coal.
Now which regs are hampering coal production out East, that isn't affecting Western coal?
I'm not sure what your point is because you are basically parroting what I said. What I said was,
Quote:
Appalachian coal as a percentage of the coal we burn has been in decline since the 70's when they started mining in the Powder River Basin. I don't think there is any expectation that decline will not continue no matter what the case.
Except, per my relatives in West Virginia, they don't want to go to where the jobs are. They are waiting for the jobs to come back to them.
I have a relative in West Virginia who died in the mines. The death certificate reads "head crushed by rock". Others got out of mining and retrained to work on the railroads or chemical plant.
Don't forget China. We got a lot of foreign competition
Chinese exports of coal are never going to amount to anything because they need it..... You asked previously how long 25 billion tans could last. At current rates for the US that's about 30 years, it's only 5 years for China.
And no one here has mentioned another factor - increasing automation.
Nothing new, the work of 200 miners 100 years ago can be done by one guy today. This affects all industries and employees per production is always going down no matter what industry it is. This is completely separate than overall production which rose just about every year until 2008.
Maybe calling the miners suckers is a bit harsh? When times are tough and people are in a situation where they are grasping at straws, they might have the feeling that they have nothing to lose. In their eyes, it didn't look like Hillary was going to do much for them
There’s no question that Hillary would have screwed them over too. Neither party gives a hoot about the average struggling American. Ain’t no money in it.
But voting for a rich con man from New York City is every bit as foolish as voting for a neoliberal Democrat like Hillary.
That was a dangerous gamble he played. Because those miners that voted for him, expecting their old jobs to come roaring back,
The problem here is you assume everyone is stupid, they are not. People in this industry are very well of the other issues plaguing this industry. What they also know is Trump is removing policies that harm the industry they work in, they will most certainly be voting for him again mining job or no mining job because he is doing what he can. It's a hell of lot more that they will ever see from the next Democratic nominee who will inevitably be pandering to the environmentalists.
I encourage this because it's comments like this that have helped put Trump in the White House.
