I've noticed this a few times, most recently over the weekend, where he emerges onto a stage, or into a room with an audience (and press), and he starts clapping.

I suspect that if anyone asked, he'd say he's applauding the audience. But I think what he's really doing, consciously or not, is to prompt people to applaud him.
