I think alot of the problems the US has is a heretical version of Christianity is preached. The wealthy are more virtuous and closer to God and the poor are sinners who deserve to stay in there place. Its a disgusting justification for oppression and inequality.
It actually has its roots in "Calvinism" which was popular with the first settlers. One of the five tenets of Calvinism states
"Unconditional election" asserts that God has chosen from eternity those whom he will bring to himself not based on foreseen virtue, merit, or faith in those people; rather, his choice is unconditionally grounded in his mercy alone. God has chosen from eternity to extend mercy to those he has chosen and to withhold mercy from those not chosen. Those chosen receive salvation through Christ alone. Those not chosen receive the just wrath that is warranted for their sins against God"
Modern day evangelists are just using different words. Most of the general population has no clue about church and/or religious history, thus they are continually getting duped.
Shocked by a tweet from my colleague Dr. Joy Hataley that showed a 4.5-year wait for a neurology appointment, [a journalist] requested that people post their stories of unduly long wait times on Twitter, along with #CanadaWAITS.
Patients and physicians started tweeting out stories of ridiculously long wait times.
Do you have lung trouble? You could wait a year to see a respirologist.
Have a child with autism? Eight months seems to be the minimum to get services.
Live in Nothern Ontario? One community has been waiting 12 YEARS for a new family doctor to arrive, another tweet suggests.
The frustrating part for physicians like myself is that we have been telling our various governments this for years. A clear picture of far too few physicians, nurses and allied health-care providers has been evident to those of us in the health-care field for at least a decade. We've been summarily ignored by politicians.
This article from HuffPo Canada is a cautionary tale of what happens when government controls healthcare for citizens. Canadian healthcare is not the panacea the Left touts as the wonderful example of how a government manages healthcare....unless American patients want to wait and wait and wait like Canadian citizens.
Actually, I was aware of this having visited with a couple of Canadians some time ago when it came to their healthcare. It seemed similar in some ways to VA Healthcare and also Medicaid where it can take awhile to get the care. It is "free" when you get it, but you wait for it.
Of course, in the USA, many patients die while waiting for a procedure, etc. to be approved.
Take the government out of healthcare and the insurance companies, and let everyone pay as they go. Eliminating middlemen is always a plus. And, kick big pharma in the butt and make them charge us the same as they charge foreign countries.
I suspect the writer of your article doesn't have a freak'n clue because every Canadian knows their healthcare absorbs a significant amount of their ganered taxes and would never claim it being "free".
$6Kper year versus how much someone in the U.S. pays yearly for insurance PLUS what the gov't kicks in and you've then got a relevant comparison.

We're about double on the spending side per person.
I wish all the Americans pining away for the Canadian health care system would move there.
Just be sure you send Canada most of your American physicians and other healthcare professionals too. Then Canadians won't have any more wait times and we'll have the perfect system.
The Frasier Institute is a well known right-wing think tank. Their agenda is well known up there. Study after study shows Canada's healthcare is far more affordable than the U.S and everyone gets coverage, young and old.
I should also have mentioned that Cdn $12,000 per family was equivalent to about U.S. $9,100 per family in August 2015 when the article was written. Divide by 2.9 to get the per capita numbers.
