There is NO cure for bipolar although symptoms can be managed with a combination of psychiatric medication and psychotherapy.

Why do they do this to the Army?
I think the Army is doing this to itself

I just about fit that description ..... can I keep my arthritis medication?

They use to years ago then stopped because of the drawdown. Enlistment Waivers for Mental Health Tougher to Get with Reduction in Forces : U.S. Medicine

Another thing to consider too is just because they get a waiver it does not mean that they will be accepted.

A friends ex-husband (that she met in rehab for drugs) is in the Navy and getting close to retirement.

The White House embraces the mentally ill, so why should the military discriminate?

So much for the illusion that conservatives stand behind those who serve! "Band of Brothers" and all that.

WASHINGTON – People with a history of “self-mutilation,” bipolar disorder, depression and drug and alcohol abuse can now seek waivers to join the Army under an unannounced policy enacted in August, according to documents obtained by USA TODAY.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/...ues/853131001/
From that piece:

Quote:
...But accepting recruits with those mental health conditions in their past carries risks, according to Elspeth Ritchie, a psychiatrist who retired from the Army as a colonel in 2010 and is an expert on waivers for military service. People with a history of mental health problems are more likely to have those issues resurface than those who do not, she said.

“It is a red flag,” she said. “The question is, how much of a red flag is it?” ...
This is the thing, a history of mental health problems is identified as a risk (agree with) & is seen as a 'red flag' when it comes to the US military, yet ...

... not seen as a 'red flag' nor identified as a risk to have similar folks armed & walking the streets of America.

How much of a red flag is that?
