I know someone who needs back surgery but insurance says it's not necessary and won't pay. But cutting off your privates is medically necessary if you think you're a woman?

it should read "paid for by the taxpayers" rather than Pentagon.
Key words: An active duty U.S. military service member

This is exactly why transgenders should not be allowed to join the military because like it or not, once they are "active duty", they become military's liability and responsibility. They are also eligible for service related disability benefits.

They are also subject to behavioral rules and can be discharged for having a mental illness. Anyone delusional enough to believe that they are the opposite sex has no business making life and death decisions.

Am afraid it's too late now; that bull has left the barn....

The Pentagon under previous administration had no problems with gays and trans and thus things played out as they did; this is going to make whatever plots his Orangeness and his advisors are hatching to at least undo the trans part very difficult. We've seen this already with lawsuits that were allowed to proceed based upon "likely to prevail at trial".

Probably the only true out would be for the military to put all trans under the broad umbrella of "mentally ill" and thus unfit for service. This would reinstate the old policy that lead to discharges as well as keeping out any trans who apply in future; but not likely to fly in this PC culture.

Exactly... But think about that... if these people get out of the military and start getting 100% disability (or something near that) as soon as they get out then weren't they that disabled when they were still in? And if it was because of the sex change then it could be argued that the sex change disabled them... and yet they were allowed to continue to serve.

What a mess.
