I don't get it either. They simply want to keep stomping them down.
It's part of today's "winner take all" culture. Millions of people are being weeded out of the mainstream of American life due to issues like unemployment, criminal records, subpar credit, etc.
It's part of the transition to Two Americas. The first America cares not one whit about The Other America.
One of my jobs, as the boss, is to prevent loss to my business resulting from pilferage/theft by employees who have trouble managing their financial lives. That’s why nobody gets on my payroll without a background and credit check.
And nobody ever will, either. But we always ask if we can run those checks on the application, of course. If the answer is no, we thank them for their time and show them the door. You just can’t get any more fair than that.
My credit is in the tank indefinitely. I have handled retail cash on the job every workday for the past 10+ years with no issues. What exactly does my credit tell you?
I find it funny (Ironic) the people here who assume that peoples credit tells it all.My grandson was born with a heart defect and the medical bills for him are beyond amazing and yes they have Insurance.Their credit is in the tank and it's all due to medical bills now if either one of them wants to get a new job they should be denied becuase of that?????NO.
your circumstance there is easy to see on a credit report.
How so? My credit report tells you that I didn't pay two bills 15 years ago and was successfully sued for a money judgment...tells you NOTHING about the last 15 years other than that the judgments have not been satisfied. (I have paid all current bills timely over the past 15 years but there is nothing on my credit report to reflect my performance over this time.)

It's a way to weed out sick people or people with sick children who may be a problem for the employer. Nice, isn't it?

Um...nope. Nobody expects a credit report to "tell all". People use credit reports as a device to weed out people - they are looking for derogatory items which they can use to disqualify you.
While lenders use "promotional (soft) pulls" as marketing tools (e.g. to send you a "pre-approved" credit card offer), the typical use of pulling a credit report is to find a reason to weed you out.
To put it another way...when your credit report is pulled individually, it's designed to weed you out...when your credit report is pulled with 1,000,000 others ("everyone in state X with FICO>700") it's to qualify you in order to sell you something.

With all due respect I don't care. The practice is illegal in many states when it comes to job applications.
No,just not that, as proven here by numerous posters many think if your credit report is poor you're a thieve or a crook and it's not the case.
Who should decide the criteria for employment?
