This train had positive train control to automatically reduce speed but it was not turned on.
Also with this being the first run of this route for this train I've seen reports that a supervisor was on board as well. So highly doubt this was a texting/sleeping issue.
The number one cause of operator error is complacency. Supervisors are not immune to it either. I have seen plenty of supervisors off coking and joking instead of supervising. Just because someone is a supervisor doesn't make them good at the job. It just means they are called a supervisor.
The track it derailed from was brand new. This was one of the first runs by the train.
Fun fact, there has been a push for years to put in positive train control hardware. Congress even ordered it...but apparently hasn't paid for it. Instead we apparently need tax cuts for the rich more.
Boo hoo
AMTRAK needs to be ended, not funded further. It already burns through enough tax dollars.

PTC is not the cure all you think it is. Too much can go wrong with the gear.
Here's a stupid question from me... was there any safety railing on the overpass? I didn't see any.
That would be a major oversight... or a terrible safety assumption.
