I chuckle whenever I drive by the cartoonish oversized depiction of Forrest along I65 because its out of reach on private property (as all the monuments should be).
Lincoln, Grant and Sherman were some of the biggest mass murderers (and racists in their own right) in US history and yet there are monuments, schools, streets, etc all named/constructed their honor.
Like most of these discussions, logical consistency has been replaced by polics.
There will be a backlash to this white washing of history. People will not tolerate covering up neither the good, nor the bad of history. Americans don't stick our heads in the sand, and put our fingers in our ears.
Because it's the KKK. But carry on. We know what you are.
Anyone who is a member of the KKK is not worth talking to. KKK members will continue to echo the "Lost Cause Of The Confederacy" no matter how wrong they are. They are not interested in doing what is right or fair. They just want to restore the old antebellum racial hierarchy. Instead of equality for all, the KKK wants anyone who isn't White to be at the bottom, especially Blacks. The racial "hierarchy" was based on slavery. It is no surprise that someone who claims to be for the KKK would ardently take the Cobfederacy's side.

And? Confederates are traitors who fought to keep slavery. Honoring them is stupid.
Although I appreciate the back & forth discussion here, the statues in Memphis were no longer town-owned nor located on town-owned land when removed. The Memphis City Council unanimously agreed to sell Health Science Park & an easement at Fourth Bluff Park for $1,000 apiece to Memphis Greenspace, a local nonprofit.
There's recent history, so to speak, involved here. When the people of Memphis desired to simply change the names of some of the people's parks (Confederate Park, Jefferson Davis Park, & Forrest Park), the State of TN responded in 2013 by passing the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act
"... no memorial regarding a historic conflict, historic entity, historic event, historic figure, or historic organization that is, or is located on, public property, may be removed, renamed, relocated, altered, rededicated, or otherwise disturbed or altered."
The free spaces of Memphis in question here are now privately financed ~ the purchase of the parks ~ the removal of the statues ~ & Memphis Greenspace's future maintenance of the free spaces.
In a more general sense, it's somewhat analogous to how many of the statues commemorating the 'Lost Cause' historiographical revisions went up in the first place, as The United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC) were responsible.
Thank you for the info.
This makes the Memphis events even more interesting. Clever end run there...
He stopped the carpetbaggers and their stooges from raping white Southern women and committing other atrocities. Stuff like that.
Once the South was defeated, it was open season on white Southerners. Until the KKK came along.
Now it's open season on Southern heritage. We'll see how long that lasts.
It didn't take long for true colors to come to the forefront. You have to be careful not to entertain KKK propaganda or mistake their lies for facts. The KKK represents the worst part of America. Their members are cowards that hid behind sheets in the past and the internet now...
Honoring Confederates is literally honoring traitors, period. I'm happy to see a Confederate monument come down. There are other people more worthy of honor: Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, Michael Strank, Lemuel Shepherd, etc.

Dude, you're still at it??
Removing monuments commemorating traitors and racist scum isn't white washing history. All this action does is remove statues that should have never been built in the first place. Many were erected during the Civil Rights movement. To be clear, only racists and the foolish support Confederate monuments and the white supremacist symbols of hate...
Personally, I'd love to see this statute brought to the US Supreme Court. I think the upset legislators might get a result they don't want. I'll be following this with great interest.
I can't speak to the financial issues.
