As noted in the article he may be using it for leverage to get votes by including it in a much wider transportation bill.

This wouldn't just impact NJ and NY... it would impact the entire east coast. Let's hope he produces a practical plan in his transportation bill.

Waste of money... like the project in California... it’s ironic that Liberal states wants the federal government to pay most of their expenses... well, maybe not ironic... all NY has to do is raise taxes or require riders to pay a toll... you think liberals never heard of raise taxes before... Amtrak is a corrupt agency and should be 100% privatized...

Anyone who drives into NYC knows the traffic back logs, as well as the hefty tools. One would think with the revenue from tolls and taxes that NYC would be able to finance their own roads, tunnels and bridges. I would welcome that added tunnel.
At something like 105 million cars a year at $15 a car. Then there is the Lincoln tunnels. 52,000 a dat at $15.
What has New York been doing with that money? Then of course the the bridges to Long Island.

The president officially scrapped his predecessor's proposal to have the federal government underwrite half the cost of a multi-billion-dollar Amtrak tunnel connecting New Jersey to Penn Station, the busiest transit hub in the U.S. The lone existing tunnel is rapidly deteriorating, threatening to sever Amtrak's popular Northeast Corridor and to divert tens of thousands of New Jerseyans from their daily Manhattan commutes via New Jersey Transit.
Why are federal taxpayers on the hook for an Amtrak tunnel that serves one specific area? Amtrak is supposed to be a popular service on the East Coast. Why not use the profits from their service to fund the new tunnel, or maintenance on the old one? If they need a little more money-just increase the rates a bit-and make sure they use low-cost contractors to do the work.

They already do hit you with hefty tolls.

If you can’t afford the tolls than it wasn’t worth building...a business is not going to operate at a loss forever.. neither should an infrastructure project this big and costly..

Why is the whole country on the hook when a tornado happens in Oklahoma? Massive flooding from a hurricane in an area of TX that should not have been overbuilt? Earthquakes in the West? Amtrak is a federal company that most Americans may benefit from, no matter where they live or travel, and by nature funds are not dispersed in the way you wish.

This is a massive mass transit area benefitting not just us living here, but any visitors from both the country and whole world - and there are a lot of them. This is NOT just a NY/NJ/or even East Coast thing. If they let this infrastructure fall apart, a lot of people are getting screwed over and a lot of travel plans will be hindered as well as daily commutes. It is not our fault, living here, any more than it is yours that the government is not doing its job here, or anywhere else.

$15 going east into the city. 105 million vehicles a year. Not counting all the other tolls you endure. NYC can learn from Jersey. Jersey roads are in great shape. New Yorks? LOL Glad I have a tough truck.
