A lot of people think the Democratic Party should do more to appeal to Trump's base if they want to have a shot at winning. However, I don't think this is true. I believe that people who are still hardcore Trump supporters are going to vote for Trump in 2020 no matter what.

I think a winning platform for Democrats would be policies that Trump's base my despise but that a majority of Americans would support. I think if the Democrats include the following issues in their platform, they will have a solid shot at beating Trump.

- Replacing Obamacare with a single payer, medicare-for-all healthcare system
- Restoring relationships with our allies
- Restoring sanity and maturity to the office of the Presidency
- Protecting LGBT rights, women's rights, and the rights of non-whites
- Higher education reform
- Restoring net neutrality
- A tax code that favors a strong middle class over the top 1%
- Sensible regulations on the financial industry to prevent another 2008 (if we don't have one before 2020)
- Protecting the environment and taking climate change seriously
- Legalizing marijuana at the federal level

As I've said, most Trump supporters will detest these ideas, but a majority of Americans support them. If the Democrats run on these issues, I think they will be able to beat Trump.

Dems need to worry about losing their own base as well as moderates who are increasingly turned off by the strident progressive wing.

I doubt anyone who still supports Trump at this point would leave him between now and 2020.

Dems have problems of their own.

A reason Trump won is that he was able to get moderate Democrats, and Independents to vote for him. These same voters will be up for grabs again, but don't want to keep hearing the Identity Politics message of the Dems. If they don't have a more centrist message, and policy positions to back it up, then Trump will win again.

No

There is nothing they can do about Trump's base. Only Trump can effect his base.

It won't be effected negatively by liberal media that's for sure. They are campaign posters for reelecting Trump.

I'm a Progressive and I agree with you.
If I may add one. Update the Fair Labor Standards Act to make sure that the a manager making 40K gets paid OT and make the minimum wage reasonable.

Those were all good suggestions. The Democrats would do well to adopt your platform, if they don't lie down and play dead like they did with tax reform.

Didn’t Trump win on Trump’s platform?

It’s like saying, “We should run on overturning the platform that got Trump elected.”

I actually liked most of Trump’s campaign promises. I didn’t vote for him because I thought he didn’t like the promises he made.

In 2020, Trump is going to campaign hard again in the upper mid-west. That much is a given.

Whoever wins Ohio is going to win the election. That is what Dems have to keep their eyes on.

Trump's base is shrunk down to the 30% is will stay at. The other 16% who voted for him left since election day.

That leaves 70% of the electorate up for grabs - excellent odds for anyone who is not with Trump...if people show up to vote.

The thing to worry about are increased Republican efforts to suppress the vote.

I’d bet Hillary’s base is smaller than Trump’s.
