Isn’t a restaurant a hard business to start anywhere? I remember hearing that a lot close in the first year.
Yes. It takes at least 2 years before you start to see a profit, and you just have to hope that the newness of the restaurant doesn't ware off and your customers don't start to look for the next new hotspot.

Often in the news we here of companies doing away with some positions due to the $15 hour wage increase.
Such as order takers, cashiers etc.

The minimum wage in SF is $14 an hour, it won't increase to $15 until July, but employers can't find people willing to work for $15 now, so what difference does it make if the minimum wage still isn't high enough to attract workers. I just looked on Indeed.com for job openings in San Francisco restaurants, not all of them list wages but a quick look shows higher than minimum starting wages being offered by many of them:

Cantonese Restaurant South San Francisco $2500-$3500 plus tips includes health ins.

So, it would take 3.7 people working full time and each contributing half of their take home pay to rent to a one bedroom apartment.
I think restaurant closings in San Francisco are to be expected. I'm sure that many people locals and tourists look at the price of restaurant food and think twice and look at other options including fast food, but that's not attributable to $15 an hour if employers can't find people who will work for less, is it?
My Stepson and his family live in SF, he and his wife have a good income and they like to eat out, but because of the rising menu prices they now depend more on delivered pizza, food trucks and pop-ups. He said the restaurants that are closing are usually overpriced trendy startups with unremarkable food.
The jobs that are going do not generate much tax revenue. With EITC, in most cases, these people take income tax revenue, instead of pay it. These are the McJobs.
I don't like EITC, but not for the reasons you seem to hate it but rather because I think it subsidizes low paying employers who could not attract workers if they weren't getting EITC. Get rid of it and craptastic employers offering $11 an hour might find that they have to pay $14 or $15 to get job applicants
Looks like 350 restaurants closed in San Francisco, while 277 opened.
The full $15 minimum wage isn't even in effect and already the pink-slips and restaurant layoffs are in full effect from the extremely high labor costs.
If San Francisco with double the per-capita personal income of Los Angeles and three times that of the Inland Empire can't afford the minimum wage increase even before the full increase has taken into a effect one can only imagine what happens when with the hospitality industry when it is up to the full $15.
By the time $15 minimum wage takes effect, California is projected to cost the state around 400,000 jobs
Minimum wages should be linked to housing costs. Ideally that would cause government to resolve the housing shortages it creates and maintains - the housing shortages which drive political pressure for higher minimum wages.
As most of you know the Restaurant business is a very difficult business to begin with. Closing of businesses happen. How do we know what it’s due to? Quit trying to read into everything with a Fox News opinion.
