This is probably not a surprise to most, but just thought I'd mention it:
Jeff Sessions Is Questioned for Hours in Russia Inquiry
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was questioned for several hours last week by the special counsel’s office as part of the investigation into Russia’s meddling in the election and whether the president obstructed justice since taking office, according to a Justice Department spokeswoman.
The meeting marked the first time that investigators for the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, are known to have interviewed a member of Mr. Trump’s cabinet.
In response to questions from The New York Times, the spokeswoman, Sarah Isgur Flores, confirmed that the interview occurred. Mr. Sessions was accompanied by the longtime Washington lawyer Chuck Cooper to the interview.
The attorney general announced in March that he had recused himself from all matters related to the 2016 election, including the Russia inquiry. The disclosure came after it was revealed that Mr. Sessions had not told Congress that he met twice with the Russian ambassador to the United States at the time, Sergey I. Kislyak, during the campaign.
Mr. Mueller’s interest in Mr. Sessions shows how the president’s own actions helped prompt a broader inquiry. What began as a Justice Department counterintelligence investigation into Russia’s election interference is now also an examination of whether Mr. Trump tried to obstruct the inquiry, and the nation’s top law enforcement officer is a witness in the case.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was interviewed for several hours last week by the special counsel’s office investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election, a Justice Department spokesman said Tuesday.
Mr. Sessions recused himself from the investigation last year, following the disclosure that he had conversations with a Russian official while advising the Trump campaign in 2016. That left his deputy, Rod Rosenstein, in charge of the Russia matter. The attorney general had been expected to be interviewed by investigators at some point.
Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been examining, among other things, whether anyone tried to obstruct the investigation of Russian meddling, including through President Donald Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey.
Mr. Sessions is one of the highest-level officials to be interviewed by the special counsel’s office. Mr. Mueller has secured a guilty plea from Mike Flynn, Mr. Trump’s former national security adviser, for lying to the FBI, and he has charged Paul Manafort, a former Trump campaign chairman, for alleged tax-related offenses dealing with work he did before the campaign.
The interview comes as some Republicans have stepped up their attacks on the special counsel’s inquiry.
Sessions interviewed for hours by Mueller's team in Russia probe
Attorney General Jeff Sessions spent several hours being grilled by the special counsel’s office last week as part of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, the Justice Department confirmed Tuesday.
This is the first time that investigators for the special counsel are known to have interviewed a Cabinet member. Sessions is thought to be the highest-ranking Trunp administration official to be interviewed to date.
The meeting comes as Robert Mueller looks into whether President Trump’s actions in office, including the firing of FBI Director James Comey, constituted obstruction of justice.
Sessions is seen as a potentially important witness given that Trump initially said he fired Comey last May at the recommendation of the Justice Department.
I wonder what the over/under for the times he "could not recall"?
My hunch (and I could be wrong) is that Mueller isn't so much interested in Sessions' "spotty" recall of his meetings with the Russian diplomat but rather Sessions' memory of his meetings with Trump regarding Comey's firing.
It is sort of ironic that Sessions, the U.S. Attorney General, needed to have an attorney present for an interview with Mueller, who is working for the Department of Justice, the agency Sessions oversees.
This investigation sure does have a lot of twists and turns.
This hayseed is typical of the personnel hired by Trump to fulfill his agenda. I bet he can recall. It’s all an act. Behind that dumb looking face lies a racist and moron.
Why did so many Trump surrogates and campaign staffers fail to mention their Russian contacts?
