There are some essential government workers (such as the military, medical staff in VA hospitals, etc) who obviously should get back pay since they did go to work during a shutdown.

But should non-essential government workers who are furloughed get back pay? Shouldn't they have to use their vacation time? Is it fair to the "essential" workers that the non-essential ones are paid just to stay home? Is it fair to the American taxpayer to pay them for not working? And then they probably can argue they need "overtime" to catch up on the work during the shutdown........

I personally think federal workers who didn't actually work during a shutdown shouldn't get paid.

In the private sector .......

When a Union calls a strike and the company shuts down (except for essential jobs) - the Union Employees are not paid and the non-union employees are not paid. They can take paid vacation days if they have them.

Why should TaxPayer funded jobs be any different?

Absolutely they should. Your average IT guy, finance analyst, and park ranger has no control over the idiots in Washington who decided to shutdown the government. They have no control whatsoever over not being able to go to work. They can and will be paid retroactively once gov't is back up and running.

If you don't like it, get a federal job so you too can have a "paid vacation" during a gov't shutdown. The money they were going to be paid is already part of the gov't budget anyway, so it's not like we're shelling out extra tax dollars to pay them retroactively.

Because this wasn't a strike. In industry, absent contract language for wages, if an operation would shut down (say for a power failure) the employees could probably file for unemployment.

Well considering that Congress assured that they would be paid I think their "earnings" should be spread out to the average workers that missed out on a paycheck.

In the real world when a business shuts down people do not get paid so why should this be any different.

What would be cool is if the people do get paid for the days off they could receive a check from Trump with a note that says "remember who shut you down (the Dems) and why (illegal aliens) come election time"..

Is it really their vacation time if they are forced to take it because congress can't do their job ?

Its really the governments vacation time when government is responsible for the shut down.

There should be no non essential governmental positions. Anything considered non essential is bloated government waste. Cut the waste and it takes the politics out of a shut down. Anyone proposing it then would be a national security threat and should be dealt with as such.

Each department defines essential and nonessential for different scenarios.

When a weather event shuts things down essential personnel are those who heat the building and salt the sidewalks. Essential for the recent not-a-shutdown would be different.

Even military bases have essential and nonessential active duty classifications.

As an "excepted" fed who always works during a shutdown, of course my co-workers who are furloughed deserve to be paid. They are not permitted to use any leave (annual or sick leave) during a furlough because, there is no budget so, no money to pay their leave is available. Most Feds who are not excepted, are not making high salaries and, like most folks, live paycheck to paycheck. So, why should they be penalized because we have a dysfunctional Congress who refuses to do their jobs? And those deemed "non essential" do considerable work. When they are furloughed, everybody suffers. Personally, I think there should be an amendment that requires Congress to pass a year long budget by the end of each fiscal year. This constant b.s. allowing continuing resolutions and shutdowns results in millions of wasted taxpayer dollars, high inefficiency and an irate public.
