If the police arrest someone for, say DUI, should responsible for determining whether or not the person paid their federal taxes? Should they seize the person’s vehicle to satisfy a tax lien? Should they, then hold that person, at city expense, until the US Marshalls or IRS can send someone?
If you replace taxes with immigration status, you have the argument for sanctuary cities. Local law-enforcement cannot and should not look to enforce federal immigration law. They have no responsibility to determine a person‘s immigration status, and they have no responsibility to hold people until the feds come
Not exactly the same thing, though, is it?
Local police do cooperate with and take notice of whether people are wanted (ie, have a warrant)...and it is not restricted to warrants issued only from local jurisdictions.
So why exempt from the purview of local law enforcement only those persons wanted for immigration violations vs those wanted for other kinds of violations?
If local cops pull over the Gambino crime syndicate capo wanted for racketeering they should just let him go, right?

Your average illegal immigrant doesn’t have any outstanding warrants.

That’s a petty analogy. No, these aren’t the same at all.
However, how can any country function when it’s state laws (and LE) are in conflict with federal laws? When a city declares itself “sanctuary city” against the federal law? It’s not just about immigration. It’s also about Marijuana and other topics. That cannot work in the long run.

Perhaps that's true but only because they haven't come to the attention of law enforcement. They are "at large" unsubs not "wanted".
