but you get Fund Dividend just for staying there? we don't get that even though the funds to purchase Alaska came from the rest of the nation

That's a BS stat. It uses a national expectation of COL, that's totally oblivious to actual COL. It's like saying a single person who rents in NYC earning $24,000 annually isn't suffering the effects of poverty, which is patently absurd. Says it right here on the "info" pop-up...

Quote:
The official poverty thresholds do not vary geographically, but they are updated for inflation using Consumer Price Index (CPI-U).
We all know that COL varies city to city and state to state, so using national estimates of income to measure poverty levels is absurd, because just housing varies in costs, to say nothing of fuel, power, food, insurance.

That said after living in AK for 9 years, I can tell you, that the majority of people who are benefitting from SNAP and Medicare/Medicaid are urbanites/suburbanites, who are much more likely to be democrat voters, than republicans. When you get outside of Los Anchorage (there's a big hint for ya) and FB/NSB the non-natives are neither hardcore conservative or liberal, but kind of mind your own damn business, and don't tell me what to do.

If you ever want the Red States to turn into Blue states (which is itself an oxymoron, all states are purple), you're going to have to bite the bullet and not pull funding for social services from states that don't vote your way. Nothing says "vote for the other guy" more than screwing your voter base in a minority state.

If you haven't clicked through on the link in the first post, do so. Here's the link again:

https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2018-...ession-deepens

The first thing you'll see is a map of the U.S. showing the economic status of all 50 states. The green ones are the ones with the strongest GDP growth. The red ones are the ones having less success. Looks like AK isn't alone in being in a bit of a slump right now.

If you are a logical person, you'll also notice that your perceptions of the political slants of individual states doesn't neatly correlate across the board to how well (or poorly) those states are doing.

There are so-called "liberal" states doing well. And there are so-called "conservative" states doing well. And vice versa. That's because the way a state may slant doesn't tell you everything you *think* you know about that state's strengths and weaknesses, individual economic issues, or even the people who live in that state.

We need to stop trying to define everything in partisan terms. Trying to use individual states to prove partisan points is silly and pointless.

If you want to learn about a particular state consider posting your questions about the state in the state's City Data sub-forum rather than stereotyping an entire state in the national politics sub-forum with partisan B.S. Put aside your stereotypes and politely ask the people who live and work in the state what it's like to live there, and what they see as their state's strengths and weaknesses. Don't jump into the forum trying to make their state look bad; no one likes that, and all it does is shut down conversation.

Who knows -- you may even discover that there is NO state in the union where every single person shares the exact same beliefs or lives the exact same type of life.

This is what Republicans want. Wealthy people paying very little tax while the poor and middle class live without enough food and quality healthcare.

I say we let these Alaskans eat Trump brand cake, they need to pull those bootstraps a little harder. Handouts are for commies.

For those of you "people" who have never ventured out of the wool laden raccoon Alaskans are not bothered by your comments. I won't share here why it is a special place....best to tell you to keep comfortable and avoid going....but KNOW why they use words like 'awesome' and 'magnificent'. You think its the expression for the foam the Starbucks barista puts on your coffee....you don't know nothin about awesome and you know little still about what it took to settle live and thrive in the Arctic.

Stay where you are. You could not make it there....

Maybe best to practice what is preached and go live there instead of Seattle? The red state of Alaska will figure it out, they don't need any help from us, that would be socialism!

I'll take your word for it. I use to dream of moving to Alaska but I'm a little long in the tooth for that now.
Anyway, as I understand, Alaska is in an economic slump largely due to the oil/gas industry layoffs. This is nothing every other state hasn't or cant experience. Big lay offs people need temporary unemployment and government assistance just like folks in all the other states. That is what it is for. The title of this thread very misleading.

As I understand it at least job losses are tapering.
