You can not rank something that is completely subjective. If you're a small business owner you certainly do not want to be living in Mass; the cost of doing business is too high, the government is too complicated to comply with, the taxes are too high. But if you work in the public sector Mass is a great place to work with high salaries and great benefits. While Louisiana is a great place to open a small business and a terrible place to work in the public sector. Likewise for social issues, if you're a gun enthusiast LA is great MA is terrible; if you're a gay rights activist the opposite. All completely subjective.

Spot on analysis! There are so many factors to think about. The reality is that most Americans can make it in any state and we are all almost the same, no matter which start we live in, whether it be MA or MS

That's not necessarily true. There are many small businesses in which a place like Massachusetts would be an ideal place to locate -- a software company, for example, due to the presence of so many universities in the Boston area and thus, access to university talent. Many other businesses, as well. Cheap is not always better, even for small businesses.

That's the genius of the 10th amendment people can live in the environment that suits them the best.
It's one of the worst politically, but one of the best for natural beauty and amenities.
I think Mississippi and West Virginia are worse. They have terrible job markets, drug problems, and poverty problems. WV has beautiful mountains and MS has nice beaches, but that's about all I can say about the states.
This post makes zero sense. Real estate is one of the purest capitalist markets in our country and demand for CA housing is what makes it very expensive compared to a state like Iowa. The only reason that I can think of not to live in CA is because you can't afford it. You get what you pay for is always true.
I think the worst state to live in would be North Dakota or Alabama.

Here's what I mean - this is called the Kauffman Index, which ... "The Kauffman Index of Entrepreneurship series is an umbrella of annual reports that measure U.S. entrepreneurship across national, state and top 40 metro levels. Rather than focusing on inputs, the Kauffman Index focuses primarily on entrepreneurial outputs—the actual results of entrepreneurial activity, such as new companies, business density and growth rates."
... And if you go to this page here, you see Massachusetts is ranked 4th.
The wonderful “diverse” California where the rich live behind gates and fences, the poor are herded into ghettos or homeless and everyone is sitting in traffic alone in their car because everyone hates everyone. Wonderful place.
California is a beautiful state with great weather, miles and miles of shoreline and some nice mountain ranges. The only thing wrong with California is Californians. Get rid of them and it will be nice again.
Worst state in the union? Maybe, but I'd have to say NJ is worse. People are even more obnoxious, politics are as bad and it's frickin ugly, not to mention they get snow. When it snows in Jersey, hell really has frozen over. Though coming from NY, I have to say it's a tough call.
Cali is a great place to live if you have millions of dollars .....middle class American? .... not so much
