The gas tax accounts for the fact that people who have chosen to be environmentally responsible by using more fuel-efficient vehicles should pay less than those who haven't.
Just because that electric vehicle meets your requirements doesn't mean it meets the requirements of everyone. When an electric vehicle can meet my requirements then come see me.
Agreed. Eliminate the fuel tax that unfairly punishes those with larger vehicles and put it on a per wheel, per mile basis. All cars/trucks (well, at least without dual rear wheels) charged the same per mile, since they all use the same amount of road. Pickup and SUV drivers have been subsidizing everyone else for years with the fuel tax.
You really need to adjust for weight, as the weight of the vehicle increases the damage it does to the road rises exponentially. A tractor trailer weighing 80K pounds might do 10 times the damage 20 4K vehicles do. I don't know what the number is but it's lot more.
Increasing the tax on trucking will increase the cost of goods. This will force a lot more more long haul freight onto rail where it belongs reducing the damage to the roads. As an added benefit to the motorist the costs incurred by the trucking industry are more fairly being distributed to everyone whether they drive or not.
Guess you haven't seen a utility bill recently. There are taxes upon taxes upon taxes.
Residential energy is not taxed here in PA. The only difference between fuel oil used for home heating and diesel is the dye they used to identify untaxed fuel.
As far as the fuel tax goes that tax is specifically for roads. You can buy off road fuel at some stations and marines, there is IRS forms to apply for rebates(think lawnmower business) and the same thing for the state depending on the state.
If the privacy concerns can be solved, what could be more fair? Pay for what you use.
It’s far from fair. People who don’t have cars benefit everyday from automobiles and roads whether they leave their house or not. Why should they get off free?

If you applied a per mile tax based on the weight of the vehicle and the trucking industry is paying a much higher rates those that do not drive would pay their fair share.
Everyone is sadly mistaken if they think that the tax per mile will replace the tax per gallon at the gas pump. They will have no problem taking both from you. Look at who you are dealing with and the history.
I remember back during the 2008 crisis they raised state income tax and told us it was just temporary. Do you think that ever went away? Of course not.
This is part of the reason that people are now trying to get out of Ca. it has completely lost the attraction unless you like high taxes, overpopulation and gridlock traffic all the time.

That's a big "if", and I'd never trust California politicians that they had solved them.
A gas tax takes care of 'pay for what you use' and in effect charges larger vehicles that do more damage, more to use the roads. Maybe CA should put trackers in electric cars and have them pay per mile.
