Now that I think of it, I'm not sure you'd even need E-Z Pass devices.

Cameras could record every license plate going through several key checkpoints. A computer could eliminate all those registered in the area. Everyone else gets sent a bill.

Town's weird plan to keep traffic out riles readers | NJ.com

"Officials passed an ordinance banning motorists who don't live or work in Leonia from driving on 60 local roads between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. If they don't comply they could face a $200 fine.

The borough plans to issue yellow tags for those who are exempt from the law to display on their rearview mirror and signs will be posted along the route by mid-January, officials said.

The ordinance targets George Washington Bridge drivers who cut through the 1.6 square mile town, taxing its resources and paralyzing its streets, officials said.

But most commenters decried the plan, calling it discriminatory, illegal, and generally illogical."
Yes they can.

We use waze although not at rush hour. I can see how it's a pita if your live in a town that traffic gets routed through.
The cop knows every car that passes. They have license plate readers. Its a revenue thing to see if registration is current.

The town has the responsibility of maintaining and policing those roads, so yes, they can and should be allowed to limit the use of them.

People on the Tpke need to stay on it even if it is jammed up.

Duh, how about trying to alleviate the traffic that is causing this problem instead?!

I sit in traffic coming home from work almost everyday, and what Ive noticed is usually there is no reason for large traffic jams. Obviously disabled vehicles and wrecks cause traffic to back up, but when neither of these has happened, traffic is slow in one spot and then almost magically clears up down the road...??

There was situation year about a decade ago where a road was divided between two counties right down the center line.

The bigger county was ticked off because residents were fleeing to the smaller county. Walmart relocated from the larger county to the smaller counties side of the divided road. It needed to be widened. The larger county declined despite the smaller county's offer to pay the entire cost.

Ultimately, the state stepped in and made the road a state road. Problem solved.

I would not be surprised if a similar outcome happened this case.

If they can do this, neighboring towns can counter by refusing to allow people from that town to travel on their streets? Need to go to work? Better buy some new sneakers.

The townspeople said that it could take them 30-40 minutes just to get out of their driveway. (there was a story on CBS news about this) All so the freeway drivers could cut a couple minutes off their commute time.

Our small town is sandwiched between two larger towns and our main road is beyond congested during rush hour traffic. With all the traffic coming through our roads are constantly in repair and their are plans to widen sections. There have been many complaints at town meetings. It’s frustrating when there were two new bypasses built to help congestion and no one uses them.
