It's idiotic to require a uniformed cop or government agent to leave his service weapon in his car. It would be easy to steal and you'd have an armed criminal running around with the cop's gun.

That’s sounds real familiar. Kate Stinley rings a bell in my
Head
If there was an incident in any Outback in America and they called the cops do you think they would tell the cops to put their guns away before they were allowed in. Zero common sense. Its ok though cops will do their jobs no matter what despite the lunacy.
Don't have it in front of me, but years ago, an Outback crew was herded into a walk-in cooler and slaughtered by people that did have guns.

Yes, the Kate Steinle case in San Francisco. A Bureau of Land Management agent didn't want to carry his gun while he had lunch in a restaurant in downtown San Francisco so he left it under the front seat of his car. While he was having his lunch his car was broken into and the gun stolen. It ended up being used to shoot and kill Kate Steinle, a 32 year old woman just enjoying a walk along the San Francisco waterfront with her father.

The gun was his back up. I don't believe there was any testimony that he wasn't armed at the time.

But...if it is a gun free zone the criminals wouldn't be able to bring their guns either...

Where did you get this? The gun was his service weapon. There was no evidence that he carried a backup. And in any event he left a loaded unsecured firearm in a place where it could easily be stolen. And it was. And it cost a young woman her life.

He also stated that he was required to carry his gun because he was on duty.

As it should be.
