How many years has our border been completely open on the south?
Who dropped the bomb in neglecting this for so long?
Answer these questions, and you'll start to find the underlining real problem.
Illegal aliens have been a problem for me since 1988 and they started to flood the construction trades. By 2004 there was no longer a profit, trying to compete with exploited labor and trying to do it legal and right, while still trying to maintain the craftsmanship, instead of the commodity it is today.
Democrats don't care about the impoverished and exploited illegal aliens. They care about the votes they will bring, by promising them a place on the Plantation.

There has been some semblance of border patrol since 1924.
Boundaries between the US and Mexico were finalized in 1970. There is nearly 2000 miles of border with Mexico.
Illegal immigration became a tidal wave in the 80's and peaked in 2006 with the housing bubble, before Obama was elected. Yet, some politicians and the media that feeds off them created a perception, the issue began with Obama. .
Regan granted amnesty to millions and promised to secure the border and impose serious consequences on US employers who employ undocumented workers. Neither he nor subsequent Presidents or Congress followed through.
Bush 2 ran twice on the intention of creating a pathway to citizenship for illegals. The Republican majority Congress declined to play ball and kicked the can. Doing nothing is complicit.
A bipartisan Senate Committee created an Immigration Reform bill during the Obama years. It included a pathway and a wall. The House declined to vote on it and in doing so protected their own from taking a public position.
No wall is high enough nor patrols deep enough to prevent illegal immigration so long as US employers employ undocumented workers. Only a handful of states have made e- Verify of all employees a state law. Why is this?
Too many businesses benefit from the employment of undocumented workers. It's easier to benefit and blame the Federal Government for the consequences.
Large scale employers do the e- Verify thing regardless of state law.
No shortage of former and/ or sitting governors campaigned for the 2016 nomination. Not a single one used their influence to make e- Verify of all employees a state law.
35 years of kicking the can led to right now. It has not mattered who sat the oval or held the majority. 35 years of kicking the can led to right now.

Why didn't your state Impose e- Verify of all employees as a state law? You know, state rights and all that.
Could it be too many businesses/ donors were making too much $ off the backs of illegal workers?
Seems to me most folk want the benefits of cheap labor and then blame the Fed for the consequences.
If I recall correctly, your popular 15 year Republican Governor, Rick Perry, opposed e-Verify and a wall.

25 years ago we all knew illegals picked our produce and made them cheaper, and 25 years ago no one really cared about illegal immigrants. And back then we also accepted that illegals did jobs no Americans would do and we were all fine with it.
But then Bill Clinton and the republican congress passed free trade and then millions of high paying jobs were moved to Asia. And at that point Americans wanted many of the jobs illegals had and then we began to hate the illegals.
Perhaps a better question would be why do we ignore the economic policies that made us hate illegals?
But today we attack illegal South Americans that have long been a accepted part of America, while we ignore the policies that have Americans wanting to do crappy jobs that 25 years ago we all accepted the illegals doing.
Both political parties are to blame. Democrats wants their votes and companies want their cheap labor. I want them gone.
The Bush's and Reagan are the worst offenders and caused a large majority of the problem. Obama was offender on steroids.
Your mistake here is in assuming that they will vote.
They won't. That's just a bunch of fake nonsense.
But it is true that companies have always encouraged immigration to suppress wages. It times past they sent recruiters overseas to encourage immigration when we had a more open immigration policy, when many of our ancestors arrived. The Chamber of Commerce still encourages a more open immigration policy within the Republican party policy struggle.
As a result of business support Republican politicians never wanted to aggressively prosecute employers, and these well heeled donors continue to hire illegals with impunity, they keep sending those checks to the RNC and their favorite PACs.

You will get no argument from me.
So you understand why I may have a bad taste in my mouth over this issue and Trump is finally the one with balls... big brass balls to fix it again and this time maybe forever. I got promised by Reagan, it was going to be a one time, and one time only deal. Yet, here I am having to compromise on another deal.
Seizure of all assets gained by the use of exploited illegal labor and we would not need a wall.
Anchor babies is another big issue that should never have been interpreted they way it is. But they never envisioned the Welfare state, with a police state to maintain it, in the land of the free to be specific not just meaning the kids of the Freemen.

It hasn't been completely open on the south, not like it is with Canada, but there are areas that can be crossed obviously.
Actually more people come through legally and overstay their visas. They come from all over the world but many from eastern Europe. Because these are light skinned people they are not as well understood as a problem, while many darker Mexican looking people have had family in these lands since before Texas was admitted to the USA, so they can seem more numerous than they actually are in some locales.
Also, quite a few are stowaways on vehicles. Fences don't help with that kind of problem, there must be other techniques employed.

Trumps balls on immigration and hating illegals were needed to grab the republican vote, and the once democrat supporter Donald Trump would have campaigned for open borders if that would have won him the election. And a large part of Trumps immigration policy is to support the private prison industry that gives money to republican politicians. https://www.opensecrets.org/industri...2018&ind=G7000
