Bunch a goat herders on horseback with small arms have successfully fought the world's last two superpowers to attrition standstills and eventual withdrawal. Huh...remarkable thing, that. Shouldn't that be impossible, since small arms are no match for superior military technology?

How did militia groups with loose organization, virtually no artillery to speak of, far less access to resupply and material/manpower manage to hold the greatest military and arguably some of history's greatest commanders to a virtual standstill during the American Revolution?

Part of resistance is sapping the will of your oppressor to keep up their oppression. Ask the Afghani mujahadeen.
Motivation plays a huge part. Huge.

Mountainous terrain helps.

But being able to shoot down helicopters helps as well. They're not doing that with automatic rifles.

With such a line of defense protecting the country on the first outbreak of war, we shall be able to contemplate with more equa- nimity the possibility of being forced into war with a Power of the first order. It is to be expected that this eventuality will be taken into account by our new General Staff ; that they will draw up in preparation for war a complete plan for the formation of these Volunteers who are the militia; decide where the regiments shall be raised and who shall be their officers ; arrange for their prompt equipment and have all kinds of supplies stored near the places of mobilization — ammunition for their training, books and papers for their returns and records, tents for their encampments — so that there shall be no confusion, no disorder.

You go it, Bud!

What militia? Do people mean the National Guard, the one Ike called out to desegregate Arkansas schools? (That was a good thing, by the way.)

I know National Guardsmen. They're good Americans. They will not on their own or at the behest of a rogue officer fight against the US government. They are not the last line of defense against anything the 2nd amendment assumes they come in handy for. More likely, they'd be used and useful to put it down.

They do great things for the US. Disaster relief. A ready reserve for the Army. Other things. But protecting the Constitution or protecting the citizenry against an abusive government is not something they'd be used for.

If people mean something like the Sons of Liberty and Concord, give me a break.

The school militia let them down when war was declared upon them.

I'm 1200 miles away.

I know a bunch of Guard, past and present.
They are joe average citizen.

But the difference is they have all been trained continually by real active-duty soldiers who are current in their own training. The Guard units are specialized; some unit's mission is combat, another's is support, another is armor, another is engineering, etc.
Because of this specialization, the Guard can assign units from all over the country to fill whatever a mission may be.
One mission might be flood rescue, and the next could be rebuilding the electric grid in Puerto Rico. The next one could be a military intervention in Caracas to evacuate our Embassy or relieving a worn-out unit in Afghanistan.

Oftentimes, a new mission requires the Guardsmen to undergo some heavy re-training because they are such average citizens, but they are still ready enough that the training takes less time than it would for a complete newbie. Their routine meeting schedule keeps the Guard up to date, tech savvy, and in a pretty good state of readiness.

The Guard trains for the realities our military faces, while the militia trains for fantasy wars and far-fetched scenarios that are unlikely to ever transpire.

I look at pictures of militias and see middle-aged fat guys who look like they could die from heart attacks.

I don't see any Guardsmen who are currently serving ever look like those guys. Even their senior non-coms are younger men, and the Guard's regular military training keeps them more fit physically than the average civilian.
