When Obama started his war against coal, a lot of power plants and other coal-burners converted their facilities from coal to oil, natural gas etc. It was expensive but necessary, given the damage Obama was doing to the coal industry. Then a lot of infrastructure got rerouted, substituting pipelines for railroads to bring in the fuel, another major expense.

They're not going to spend even more money converting back, just because someone else is in office for eight years max.

Obama just recognized reality.

Barring some new, technological wizardry that would result in both clean extraction and clean burning - well, the world has been moving away from coal for quite a while now - well before Obama was elected.

Why anyone thought Trump could keep his promises on this, I have no idea. The only thing I think he could do is buy the coal himself and stockpile it somewhere. Not sure that even his purported $3 billion would make a difference though.

Solar jobs where increasing 15 x faster then the general economy.

Then Trump imposed a Tariff on importing solar panels, to help the Coal industry.

Loosing another 20-30.000 jobs.

Exports for metallurgical coal is up but our consumption isn`t. If it was, this Pa. coal mine wouldn`t be closing.
Mine closing wipes out many of Trump's coal job gains - Jan. 10, 2018

H.R. 323 was introduced last year by Republican Congressman to preserve the Black Lung Benefits that were part of ACA. It was referred to the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.

Why are taxpayers stuck paying for Black Lung disease?

Why aren't coal companies paying for this through Workman's Compensation insurance or ???

Just remember: When the far-right hears about poor blacks in the inner cities who lost all their factory jobs, they snort with derision, call them all useless welfare bums, and say they should just shut up and "move someplace where there are jobs," as if it's that easy.

On the flip side, when the far-right hears about poor whites in coal country, they elect a raving lunatic for president, attempt to redefine reality with "beautiful clean coal!" lunacy, and demand tax-payer funded corporate and medical welfare to support them. Not a hint of them being "useless welfare bums," nor any demands that the rural poor in coal country "shut up and move someplace where there are jobs."

We'll pretend that race isn't a part of this oddly mixed reaction to the poor from the far-right - haha - and I guess we're also to ignore the fact that coal died for economic reasons, not because of a "liberal conspiracy."

Because in right-wing land, it is "stealing" if some of your tax money goes to provide food stamps for the urban poor working at poverty retail jobs, but it is "patriotic" if your tax money goes to provide benefits for the rural poor working in coal jobs. We'll pretend the racial differences between the urban and rural poor don't play any part in this... hahaha... sure they don't.

It seems to be a worldwide trend to close plants.

Coal's time has come and gone.

Why are those who are disabled from Black Lung disease treated differently than others disabled in the workforce?

Why are the Black Lung widows entitled to special benefits that other widows are not entitled to?

Why doesn't Workers' Compensation long-term disability benefits cover these folks?
