Looks like another promise kept. Here he said he would keep the ballooning costs under $4B.

Dec 2016 thread - Boeing Responds to Trump About the Cost of the New Presidential Planes

Today...

Trump Comes Through — Saves $1.4 Billion On New Air Force One

EXCLUSIVE to @FoxNews …New Air Force One’s coming… @realDonaldTrump reached an informal deal with Boeing for 2 new AF-1s. Fixed price deal is for $3.9 million. WH says this is a savings of $1.4 billion on total original cost estimates of more than $5billion

Now you may not like the promise, in that it's still $3.9B, but he said he would come in under $4B. That was 14 months ago.

To me, saving money is not spending it at all. We save the whole $3.9B. But I don't know what shape the planes are in.

Wonder if the new Air Force Ones will have gold plated seat belts like the private jet.

I bet none of us ever get to see the final tab. Like every other "estimate" for these kinds of things, they always end up with additions and corrections.

By the way, why do we even need new planes. Wouldn't it be cheaper to just update the current fleet ? I know planes age, but it isn't like these are commercial carriers that are in the air 24/7.

You KNOW Sir Trump will not be sitting on any plain toilet. Gold is so much smoother.

Probably comes down to the cost of retrofitting with new tech vs. just building something new from the ground up where the new tech is part of the original design. The current AF1 was built in 1990, in terms of technology that is now ancient at almost 30 years old. Heck even for street cars, they are technically considered "classics" after 25 years.

I know that logic doesn't fit into an "I hate Trump" narrative, but it seems like the logical conclusion.

According to this, they are 30 years old and have reached the end of their service life.

OK - yeah, they need an upgrade... unfortunately. More spending... more spending...

Ok, I know zero about planes, so that makes sense. Since this was started under Obama, not Trump, it must have been due, not just something Trump wanted done.

Yup, and although I despise grossly out of hand government spending, one of the few things that are worth it is protecting our POTUS. I cant even begin to imagine the global panic that would set in if our POTUS was taken out, or even in a serious incident while traveling, be it via air or car. Its a hugely important item that can be easily poked fun at, but it has enormous global implications even if the smallest thing goes wrong.

The Pentagon was originally driving this issue.
