A bill, known as the "child bride" Senate Bill 48, which would establish 18 as the legal age for marriage in Kentucky, has run into opposition from state Republicans, who argue that parents should be able to marry off their under age children without the interference of a court.

Quote:
In cases of a minor marrying an adult, the judge would have to review material including any child abuse records involving the teen and check for any sex-offender records of the adult. The judge also would have to consider factors including the maturity and independence of the teen, determine that the teen has completed high school or obtained a GED and review any domestic violence records of either party.
Stating his opposition to the bill, Boone County Republican Sen. John Schickel said, "Decisions involving a minor child should be made by a parent, not a court." Other opponents include the Kentucky Family Foundation, a Lexington-based conservative group that lobbies lawmakers on social issues.

"This is legalized rape of children," said Eileen Recktenwald, the executive director of the Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs. "We cannot allow that to continue in Kentucky, and I cannot believe we are even debating this is the year 2018 in the United States."

Research shows Kentucky has the third-highest rate of child marriages in the nation, behind Texas (#1) and Florida (#2).

Why is that every single conservative group with the word "Family" in its name is always on the side of wrong - and creepy? They will have their child brides, yes they will.

Disgraceful... and highly hypocritical.

Legal age of consent in KY is 16.
Why have 16 to be legally able to consent to sex but 18 to marry.

Definitely shows why evangelicals didn't have a problem voting for Roy Moore.

Per the article, people as young as 13 are permitted to wed.

Yep. And some Republicans, as well as the Kentucky Family Foundation, don't want that to change. Can't step on the rights of pedophiles to marry their victims, you know.

Hey, if you're married, it falls under "Family values".

"permitted", while technically correct, is quite the euphemism. Shall we say that parents are allowed to marry off children as young as 13? Because something tells me the kids aren't necessarily the ones who drive this.
