It is interesting that the EU may retaliate with tariffs against the U.S. America imports very little steel from the EU. So an EU retaliation can be seen more as a stick it to Trump move.

The EU calculates that the amount of the injury is 2.8 billion euros which is about U.S.$3.5 billion. That’s not chicken feed.

On Monday, the commission discussed with EU member states a list of products worth €2.8 billion, which, according to the EU's calculations is the amount of injury Trump's proposals could do to European economy.

I think that under WTO rules, the EU is allowed to retaliate up to the estimated total amount
of the injury.

Tariff on Chinese car imports!? China imports cars here? Do they import cars into the 51st state or 52nd state?

The EU has already set out it's plans.

Care to guess where the Buick Envision, Cadillac CT6 Hybrid, and Volvo S60 Inscription are assembled? Or where the next generation Ford Focus will be assembled starting next year? Any idea who owns Volvo?

The trouble with a big tariff on cars is that the US Consumer would have to absord the costs, with the rest absorbed by the manufacturer.

Such a move would cause tariffs the likes of which have never existed, the Germans would put pressure on the EU to put tariffs on a vast array of American products, and it should be noted that America itself is the third largest exporter of cars after Germany and Japan. The Chinese would also hit back, as would numerous other countries and ultimately the world could end up in a global recession of Trump's making.

I disagree. I’m old enough to remember a world where higher tariffs were the norm.

Americans would be the hardest hit by a trade war because they would be forced to buy higher priced products, domestic or imported, and with less purchasing power, their standard of living would decline. As for the rest of the world, they can just choose to buy from and sell to other countries where high tariffs don’t apply. I can’t think of a single product that is unique to the U.S. and with the U.S. shut off from world trade, opportunities open up to increase production in other countries for the world market.
