The quote is more famous as spoken words at one of those town-hall meetings where Tea Partiers were causing anarchy....
"At a recent town-hall meeting in suburban Simpsonville, a man stood up and told Rep. Robert Inglis (R-S.C.) to "keep your government hands off my Medicare."
"I had to politely explain that, 'Actually, sir, your health care is being provided by the government,' " Inglis recalled. "But he wasn't having any of it."
Do you think the GOP rep is lying?
Sen. DeMint of S.C. Is Voice of Opposition to Health-Care Reform
I guess even right wing financed sites like the Daily Caller were fooled - great job!

Here is TIME mentioning the same thing:

Sure it's a meme. How many times have you heard "52 states" or "you didn't build that" or "rely on their guns and religion" - stuff said only once and often as a mistake or to private audiences.
Do you really think that sign "Get a brain, Morans" - was photoshopped?
How about this one from Charlottesville - did the KKK guy know how to spell Bible?

In any case, the actual point of the meme(s) that we are discussing mean something. "You didn't build that" means that we all stand on the shoulders of giants..and each other.
In the case of Tea Partiers and many on the right, they have been conned into working against their own interests and that of fellow Americans - which is what makes the meme "funny". Of course, it's sad...but we have to find some humor in our sorrow.
We could not write Fiction which was as strange as real life...especially recently. I think Citizens United was the icing on the (bad) cake....the USA is now controlled by the biggest liars with the most money. Or, in some cases, smarts substitutes for money. Putin, for example, does a lot more propaganda and harm...with a LOT less money than the Kochs did.
I think if you are honest with yourself and us - you have to admit that the Tea Party magically appeared exactly after the election of Obama...told us the country was going to be done for if we didn't pay down the debt and lower the deficit...and then, when they had a chance to do so - vanished into thin air.
There are only two ways to explain this.....
1. They were fooled or faked or paid for...
or
2. They personally benefit from "free money" so what they really meant was "steer more of that debt and deficit into my pockets".
I'd be pleased to hear any other actual guesses as to why they 99% faded away - and reversed course toward vastly more debt and deficit.
Note - I knew some tea partiers who were sincere...but very wrong also. One who especially made me chuckle drew his salary in DC. But very soon after it started I saw the White Supremacy work it's way into it. Reporters and others who attended some of the rallies noted that many conversations were about "that" other race. They soured on it immediately.
