Yes, “Africa” a large, diverse place with thousands of cultures being solely protaryed by one group who puts plates in their lips.

Perhaps it’s done for spiritual/supernatural or aesthetic reasons but there’s a problem with entire places and cultures being portrayed as the borg.

Yes, IQ studies have been done with people all over the world, including Australian Aborigines. Why would anyone think that was unethical?

Googling "Australian Aborigines IQ" yields a ton of information on the topic. There is a good overview from a blogger here.

Perhaps he thinks science and innovation alone advance civilizations. They don’t. That alone should be a clue he doesn’t what he’s talking about. Food supply, labor demand, and farming and lots of other factors also play roles which are just as important.

Does IQ actually determine true intelligence?

Then perhaps one could explain how did Aboriginal Australians survive in nearly desert conditions for centuries long before any other groups set foot on their island (which is nearly mostly desert)?

IQ tests are a good measure of general intelligence.

Surviving in the desert is tough but doesn't necessarily require a high level of intelligence. Lizards do it.

I thought National Geographic magazine was racist when I was a little kid lol.

My great grandmother had old magazines in her basement that I used to pore though. The fact that they never showed any bare breasted white women was plainly evident to little black girl me and I thought that that was strange (as did my brother as he wanted to see all sorts of boobs lol).

Only people like the OP who don't believe that racism is a real thing can't see that the magazine often published prejudiced and racist articles and images of people around the world.

That is not to say they were a "bad" publication IMO. As they existed in the timeframe that they did, especially in the late 19th and early to late 20th century. The idea of whites/Europeans being superior (in intelligence and/or "civilization") was and still is for many, the primary ideology that they believe it and seek to promulgate, often unconsciously people do this. The magazine did provide me a glimpse of how many types of people live in our world though and it made me curious about various types of populations and peoples. It also made me realize that the "white" world often saw black and brown skinned people as savages and due to that I took it upon myself to learn a lot about various cultures and people in the world, archealogy, anthropology, world history, religions, etc. But the racism was very evident, even to a child in the 1980s. FWIW I wish I had kept some of those old magazines as they may be worth some money. My great grandmother had one from the 1890s that was more like a book IMO than a magazine. Most of the ones in her basement were from her father who passed away in the 1950s. She kept a lot of his stuff.

To be fair, there was and is a dearth of indigenous white tribes in isolated areas running around half-clothed.

NG would have to visit a European nudist colony.

FWIW I never confused the primitive tribes with my fellow citizens in DC.

As an adult, do you now understand that the women were photographed with bare breasts simply because they did not wear tops in their daily lives? Would you prefer that they had been given shirts to put on just for the pictures? Would not taking pictures of them at all have been better?

Our western view of nudity is generally pornographic. But it is arrogant to apply those standards universally. I cannot see what is racist about accurately documenting their culture.

Anyhow, we have moved toward looking more "primitive" with tattoos and ear gauges and less clothing. How about those fake tribal tattoos that were so popular. Maybe that is racist and cultural appropriation.
