The 366,000 jobs that California has added over the past year are more jobs that are in the entire state of Vermont, Wyoming or Alaska (not combined).

Not even in the go-go years of Reagan or Clinton, did unemployment in the Golden State get this low.
Just ancedotal BUT both of my kids (in their late 20s) have received unsolicited job offers with substantial raises in the last three months here in California. My daughter took the job offer (and her and her husband just bought a great new house ) but my son's company offered a bigger salary, so he's staying put (for now).

And, that makes a mom very happy.

That's not the point. We all know we can buy logged over land without mineral rights in Appalachia cheaply.

In fact, what you write proves the opposite point in many ways. Habitable CA is relatively tiny...a small portion of what many states have. These statistics are probably true for a relatively small amount of square miles, making them all the more impressive.

Just as many don't want to live in NYC, Boston, Philly or even Miami...many people may not want to live in Oakland. But, obviously, many people do. More power to them.

This doesn't bear much on the productivity (GDP) of the people of CA.

When you break out true "per capita" GDP and subtract the oil boom states (obviously Alaskans aren't the most productive of the USA, nor N. Dakotans)....CA. comes in about #6 in the country.

I think the OP is trying to point out the "backward world" that is often expressed here and elsewhere. Listening to many of these people, you'd think Atlanta is paradise and CA. is the most horrible and dead-broke place on the earth. Not true.

CA. could become it's own country and it would be one of the leaders of the world. Add in the other Pac. Coast states and it would be about #4 in the entire world in GDP. It's #6 as it is (by itself).

This is truly impressive and something Americans should be proud of....that is, assuming they were educated and capable of understanding economics and American innovation.

For the many Russia lovers and apologists here - that means CA - is DOUBLE the size of the entire country of Russia in terms of GDP. Quite impressive.
If California is such a great place to live, why does a ton of people flee and move to states like Nevada, Arizona, Texas, etc...

Would you agree it's because they want lower taxes and affordable housing? Or they don't want to live next to homeless, druggies, felons, illegals, filth, etc....

California sure is boomin, just not for the people liberals say they care about.

Did they falsify the unemployment rate like Obama did by not counting all the people who gave up and stopped looking for work?
By far California is the most populous state with almost 40 million.

As such, they would like have more “fill in the blank” than any other state.

Simple- because there are a ton of people there.

If you haul a ton of mulch over your property in a wheelbarrow, you will spill more than if you move one bag. CA has more of most everything, including money and innovation.

Many people cannot live full time in urban areas. Count me among them. That has nothing to do with the subject at hand. I'm sure that Californians are happy that many people are moving out - because parts are overcrowded. But keep in mind they have both the option and the $$$ to move out because of the innovation and economy. If said people lived in many others areas, they would not have the same options.

California has a net migration of people coming IN from other states. To paraphrase Mark Twain: rumors of California's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

You can find the actual data from the BLS website here. Chart of the unemployment rate from that website:

Similar numbers from the state of California reflect that boom. Article on the topic:

Employment boom: California jobless rate hits lowest level ever

And as reported elsewhere on this forum, California has added more jobs - FAR more jobs - than any other state over the past year. By far.

Absolute numbers:
+366,000 - California
+249,800 - Texas
+163,900 - Florida
+116,200 - New York
+89,800 - Washington
+86,300 - Pennsylvania
+69,900 - North Carolina
+65,300 - Georgia
+61,100 - Colorado
+58,500 - Arizona

Even as a percentage, California is in the top 10. And beating out Texas, Arizona and Florida ...

Percentage:
+3.6% - Idaho
+3.2% - Nevada
+3.2% - Utah
+2.7% - Washington
+2.5% - Oregon
+2.3% - Colorado
+2.2% - California
+2.1% - Arizona
+2.1% - Texas
+1.9% - Florida

But, maybe we shouldn't be surprised:

California Dreamin' #1
California Dreamin' #2
California Dreamin' #3
California Dreamin' #4
California Dreamin' #5
California Dreamin' #6
California Dreamin' #7
California Dreamin' #8
California Dreamin' #9
California Dreamin' #10
California Dreamin' #11
California Dreamin' #12
California Dreamin' #13
California Dreamin' #14
California Dreamin' #15
California Dreamin' #16
California Dreamin' #17
California Dreamin' #18
California Dreamin' #19
California Dreamin' #20
California Dreamin' #21
California Dreamin' #22
California Dreamin' #23
California Dreamin' #24

Great! Maybe the California invaders can go back to their crummy overpriced state!

As for the broader topic of net migration, here's one of where young college-educated graduates tend to move.

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/22/u...-to-leave.html

Note well that the Pacific Coast is well holding its own against the more conservative growth states. Heck, the Pacific Northwest even has a higher rate of net in-migration of that demographic than the Atlantic Southeast!

In the Midwest, when considering only that demographic, Illinois joins Minnesota as a net gainer from that demographic, unlike the rest of the Midwest.

So that map (Where Young College Educated Graduates Tend to Move), about halfway down the page, shows that ideology matters less than job availability for that demographic.

Even so, it's interesting that the cuttingest edge R&D into science and technology tends to remain in New England and on the West Coast. Even within the South, the most tech-oriented economies (Austin, Raleigh-Durham) tend to be in the least conservative areas. Even if you're looking at Dallas-Ft Worth and Houston, I wouldn't call these areas these days conservative so much as "not as liberal", more specifically, economic conservative, socially libertarian.
