North Korea is a foe, so was Iraq under Hussein.

Countries like Russia and China are more like competitors. They are large enough to have their own spheres of influence, and the game being played isn't really about 'death and destruction,' but more about soft geopolitical power.

Iraq was stable under Hussein. He did kill thousands in 1982 and 1988 but he meant absolutely nothing to us in 2003 or at any other time.

China's desire is to be the dominate world power economically then militarily and politically.
If you want communism they are a friend. If not, they are the competition and foe.

Same as every other nation on Earth - neither, they are a competitor.

They are our creditor. We are “allies” in the sense of having shared interests because of that relationship. Labels like “friend” and “foe” are irrelevant except to those whose grasp of world affairs was arrested at a 6th grade level.

How could China be a foe?

Practically everything I buy is made from there or has parts made from there. Their goods keeps things on the cheap in the U.S.
