To get a more accurate number, we would have to go back 100-150 years of gun sales and add up all small arms sold since say the end of the civil war. Those arms, minus a fair amount out of commission for wear, tear and abuse would be the total amount of small arms in the USA/North America.
I have 4. Two were great grandaddy's. Who counted them? He might have gotten them from his dad. One needs a firing pin. My nephew is a gunsmith. He says it will have to be custom made.

Now that's an interesting thing, how much ammo should one have in each caliber?

I am currently figuring 5000 in each caliber, based on what is shot in a month vs shortages that may occur at any time for one reason or another.

So at the last calculation, that puts it up around 60K rounds total.

And I'm only one gal!

Wow you have like 15 grand worth in ammo.

I've got about 3500 223 and 4500 9

Well, I do like to deal in precious metals.

HOWEVER, I am afraid you misunderstood what I said.

I was saying that the calculation indicated that for each caliber, I should have 5000 rounds.

So-o,

.308
.223
.22
9mm
.32
.380
.45 ACP
.45 Colt
12 gauge
20 gauge
.45 Colt Shot
Obscure such as 8mm and others

for 12 or so calibers, I should "shoot" to have 5000 rounds each....right?

Assuming that it is around 12 calibers or so. I recently found out that a rifle chambered for .223 shouldn't do 5.56 but it's okay the other way around. Fortunately, for the rifle manual that said that, the second does apply so it is not a problem.....for it. I don't know in other circumstances.

I reload not only to save money, but also I reload a few oddball calibers that are either not found anymore, or are very rare, and expensive. When I know I am going to be a my gun club for a range session. I will crank out rounds a few days before, but I always have powder, primers, brass, and bullets on hand.

I did misunderstand. Couldhave sworn you meant you had 60k rounds. But it is really late and I'm exhausted.

Wow that's a lot of calibers. I consolidated to 9 and 223 years ago for cost and they are themost common rounds. I recommend a minimum 1000 rounds per gun.

But yes the more the better. If you can do 2500 per gun or 5000 then great! Ammo will never lose value and will last for decades if stored in an average temp room and dry as well

That's pretty smart. I've done the opposite. 9MM, .45 ACP, .45 Colt, .38 Spl/.357 mag, .380, 9x18, 7.65 French Longue, 7.63 Mauser, 7.5 French, 8MM Mauser, 7.62x39, 5.45x39, 5.56MM/.223, .22LR, .22Mag, and probably a few others I forgot. I shoot 9MM, .45 ACP, .22LR, and 5.56 the most.
