Well we've had a catholic in the white house, an actor and now a character actor so why not the first black man. All that's missing is the First Woman president.
Choosing a President should never be about identity politics. It should be about choosing the best candidate/person....irrespective of a 'demographic box check', which made the result of the 2016 primaries all the more glaringly pathetic.
Carter might be decent and honorable but he was inept as President. BTW, Carter himself has defended Trump and has said that the way the press is treating him is reprehensible.
Despite your snarky comment about W. and his paintings, yes he is well beloved in Africa because of his work with AIDS and other health issues.
From the NYT:
"While George W. Bush is remembered at home for war, terrorism and national security, in Africa he is seen as a lifesaver who as president helped arrest a deadly epidemic and promoted development of impoverished lands. Now out of office, he has devoted his post-presidency in part to continuing to aid the world’s poorest continent.
(Snip)
"While in office, Mr. Bush started the Millennium Challenge Corporation to direct aid to African states that tried to reform corrupt and undemocratic governments. He also initiated the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, or Pepfar, which invested tens of billions of dollars to fighting H.I.V., and later tackled malaria and tuberculosis.
By the time he left office, millions were receiving retroviral drugs keeping them alive, and polls showed approval of the United States at 65 percent in Tanzania, and in the 70s and 80s in other African countries. During a final trip as president in early 2008, Mr. Bush was warmly greeted by huge crowds of the sort he never saw at home anymore."
It's too bad you can't put aside your partisanship for a minute just to have a conversation.
This may cause some 'heads to explode', so to speak, among some who have participated in this thread (and I say that as a non Trump supporter, who also hasn't praised Obama on this thread) but......
Jimmy Carter says Don't Impeach Trump Even If Mueller Finds Dirt on President in Russia Investigation:
I'm pretty sure that "class" and "grace" would have to be wholly redefined for the FLOTUS station for this to be the case. Your assertions are wholly typical of liberal sociopolitical delusion:
I would rather have a down to earth FLOTUS than one who thinks she lives in Camelot while he hubby cheats on her. Oh wait we talking about Trump or JFK.
I miss them too - but I'll take issue with the adjectives. I don't think being "down to earth" is anything particularly admirable. Nor do I think that "cool" and "chill" is how we should be praising Obama.
I would prefer to praise him as intelligent, classy, hard-working, curious, compassionate, articulate, contemplative - all those adjectives that are lacking in the Oval Office at present.

Oh, pray tell us who lives up to your exalted standards? I don't understand why so many people don't understand the difference between a plan and a promise, and don't understand that candidates campaigning don't know what the reality will be after the election.
