I would have kept the regulation in place. I also used to be quite anti-ethanol but truth be told they've gotten so efficient at it now it's actually a net energy positive. Sometimes a little government regulation to "push" along technological progress that otherwise isn't done because companies tend to be out to cut costs over anything else, can be a good thing. It forces them to put money into researching this tech.

Everybody says internal combustion engines are dead... no... not until we have hot swappable battery cells so we don't have to spend $3000 to replace a dying battery pack, cells that are compatible with every make and model of a vehicle, that can be exchanged at gas stations to extend range without having to wait around for a charge, and that is NEVER going to happen because companies love their proprietary tech so they can try to strangle the market with their overpriced accessories. Just ask Apple or Sony.

It takes MORE energy to produce 1 gallon of ethanol gas then none ethanol gas.

Ethanol gas needs additives put in it to STOP clogging carburetors etc.

The REAL insanity is those who make this claim!

Welcome back to pre- 1975 when Japanese automakers ate US automakers lunch. CAFE has made cars better. The reliability of all cars is improving as a result of them having to burn fuel better. It is a well known fact that the internal combustion engine is not efficient and CAFE regulations forces the industry to make better cars. We'll just have to keep buying Toyotas. Our President likes living in the glorious past.

California is a joke! They want to be known as the leaders of clean air and they have some of the worst air in the Nation. I use to travel out to LA once every week. If it was not the smog in the valleys; it was the smoke from the wildfires. Then they also have all the dust from the numerous off-road vehicles. Sometimes the dust was so thick that it was had to see driving down I-15 from Barstow. You look at the hills and they look like checkerboards from all the dirt bikes and ATV's. The damage done from people 'playing' will be visible forever.

It isn't only that; but that whole area around LA is artificial. They can only maintain 'green' by stealing water from somebody. Without the water they will burn and they do; even with the water.

Then you have their homeless problem that they think doesn't count: https://www.usnews.com/news/us/artic...the-west-coast. You tell me if they look like our environmental leaders:

To hear the sheep bleat, you'd think car buyers wouldn't want safe, economical transportation if not for bureaucratic edicts from up on high.
And to hear the same sheep, you'd think automakers wouldn't give their customers what they want without threats of violence from govt gunmen.

I knew there would be plenty of negativity towards this. Here is the funny thing, the vehicles that are selling the most, are large ones. Full size cars, trucks and SUV's.
We can't have our cake and eat it to. If people really cared, small vehicles would be the ones selling. So hopefully anyone unhappy with this better be driving a Prius or equivalent.

Eventually the state will have us all in self-driving, featureless, people moving pods whose occupants will need to submit a destination in advance before being granted permission to move about on the states roads.
How fun!

Do you have any citations for that, or are you just posting opinion?

I have this: There are 42 states that have a higher dependency on Federal subsidies than California.
