The UK government has set up a new National Security Unit tasked with tackling disinformation from state actors and others.
Here are two articles about the UK national defense unit (moderators: please note the quotes from the UK government are public domain)
It sounds like the UK's definition of "fake news" may be a little different than the President's, but do you think that the U.S. should establish a similar national defense unit? '
The UK government is to establish a new unit to counter "fake news", Downing Street has said.
Theresa May's spokesman said the "dedicated national security communications unit" would be charged with "combating disinformation by state actors and others".
"We are living in an era of fake news and competing narratives. The government will respond with more and better use of national security communications to tackle these interconnected complex challenges.
"We will build on existing capabilities by creating a dedicated national security communications unit. This will be tasked with combating disinformation by state actors and others. It will more systematically deter our adversaries and help us deliver on national security priorities."
A committee of MPs is currently carrying out an inquiry into the "growing phenomenon" and has demanded information from Facebook and Twitter including on Russian activity during the EU referendum.
I rather not have the government involved in any sort of news/media.
They spin and manipulate their own released information enough, let alone deciding in their mind what is real and what is fake. Fake will always come down to "does it counter promoted policies?"
Agreed. As sick as I am of the lies of CNN, NYT, WAPO, ect, one thing that is worse is giving the government the power to censor them. While the current admin could use such power to shut down these "deep state" tools, what happens when the other side is in power?
NO, the last thing we want is a government with the power to censor private media. Or a government with a broadcast network to promote a particular message.
You do know the difference between a meme and a news report, don't you?
I worked in a newsroom. Print. Daily. Of course I do.
But when the meme gets just as many "likes and shares" and gets repeated as fact because it supports a confirmation bias, it might as well have the same effect.

If a meme gets as much, or more, attention as a national/international news segment does, then that news writer/media source should just throw in the towel. Pretty bad if they can't compete with a meme.
