Yeah, great we need more policing by the government. How will that curb abuse. You realize the abuse is lying on your application about eligibility and "selling" your stamps for cash.
I don't give a hoot what food people buy with their allotment.
Abuse is also taking more money from the taxpayer than necessary. Soda and junk food is unnecessary and leads to health issues down the line (guess who's gonna have to pay to treat that!!!??).
Bottom line is that SODA is the #1 food stamp purchase. If they have money left over for Soda, we're giving them way too much money. Or in other words, we are TAKING way too much money from high income earners.

They get X amount of dollars. What they buy with it is their business. They don't get extra money. The program is to supplement their food budget.
Who is going to pay for it? You telling me you pay for everyone who has issues due to drinking soda?
Your contribution to Medicaid goes to lots of different people under lots of different circumstances.
There are simple fixes that can be made to food stamp programs that will curb abuse. Eliminate the ability to use them to buy soda, candy, chips, ice cream, and other non essential junk food. Make it similar to WIC so they can only use it for important nutrient rich essential products (meat, cheese, milk, vegetables, fruits, whole grains)... You know, ingredients that focus on making healthy meals.

They don't "get" they TAKE.
I had an additional $200K "redistributed" this year on Obamacare tax to pay for other people's healthcare. I still have to pay for my own health coverage out of pocket. And that's on top of having to pay well over $1M in income tax.

I agree with you in theory.
However soda is CHEAP, and I wonder if that's why it is the number one item.
Two liters can be had for less than a dollar.
If a case of 24 goes on sale for $5.00, that is roughly 20 cents a can.
Think about that in terms of packing a lunch.
I buy my son bottled juice which is about .67 each, or chocolate milk, which is over $1.00 each.
Soda is definitely not healthy (especially the diet kind) but it is cheap.
