The first person to set foot on Mars should be a woman, according to Nasa's astronaut training chief.
Although there have been several female astronauts, only men have actually walked on the lunar surface.
It's more than 40 years since Nasa chose its first female astronaut but space exploration as a whole is still a male-dominated work environment. Allison McIntyre, a senior Nasa engineer at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, noted that a dozen men have already walked on the moon.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, she said: 'My centre director is a woman, my former division chief is a woman, we have female astronauts, but we haven't put a woman on the moon yet'.
Really sad that even NASA can't escape identity politics. I also love how often feminists use the "x is male-dominated!" so it's automatically bad. Not as if it makes perfect sense for it to be so in many jobs/professions which men are just typically better suited for.
If you are on the mission, you are qualified. The standards for joining the core are ridiculous, the standard for a mission like this are going to be even more ridiculous. Only the best of the best are going to be considered out of an already elite pool.
Thus, since you already have the best of the best selected, there is absolutely no harm in her being the first to walk on the planet. There is no reason what so ever to not allow a female on the team to make this symbolic first step. Everyone on this team is qualified to make it and woman have waited long enough for a moment like this.
It isn't going to make your already tiny peepee any smaller. If you feel that way, rush out and buy yourself a new ruler and double check in the morning when you wake up. You'll notice that and already qualified female getting the nod to be first on another planet isn't a big deal. So try and not make it one.
It's not like the Mars trip will be an all-female crew.
Perhaps the first trip to Venus should be.
