Yeah, I don't understand the love for Laura Bush either. Personally, I couldn't stand the women and think she was one of the more useless first ladies we've had recently.

Depends on how "best" is defined.

Most liked, most successful, most popular?

Most liked would probably be Eleanor Roosevelt or Jackie Kennedy.

Most successful, Hillary Clinton, hands down.

The first acting woman President was Edith Wilson.

Agree. She stepped in when forced to. I don't think any of the others actually had responsibility thrust upon them.

I'd bet that most here - truthfully - do not know enough about all of the First Ladies of the 20th century to make a valid judgement call. Not that that will stop people from commenting. Most of the first ladies could not even be named if one's life depended on it.

People are forgetting Laura Bush advocating literacy and advancing women causes especially in the Middle East. She started the National Book Festival in Washington D.C that is held every Summer and has ever since she was First Lady. It has grown every year. In that regard, she continued Barbara Bush legacy.

She is so well loved because she was a very nice person all around who didn't seem to have anything bad to say about anyone and didn't complaint She stayed out of politics (Not having any kind of political agenda like Hillary) and didn't try to influence policymaking and voice her opinion on Government Matters. She stayed in the background and let George do his Job but still supported him. She also got lots of sympathies because she was married to George W. Bush but not in the same way Melnia get sympathy for being married dot The Donald.

If She had overstepped her boundary she would have heard from her Mother-in-Law Barbara Bush who stayed out of politics and not try to influence policymaking. She probably did not want that.

As you can imaigne Barbra was Laura biggest mentor.
