Autism covers a very wide spectrum.

What was termed Asperger's Syndrome until recently includes people who are high functioning and often intelligent and articulate, but who have "quirks" and have difficulty understanding non-verbal communication and social norms.

These people often go undiagnosed due to their high intelligence and academic ability and good vocabularies, but I would suspect most of the recent shooters who have been termed autistic would fall in this category rather than being among those more severely affected who cannot express themselves verbally and who flap or rock or have other similar disruptive behaviors.

People who are high functioning but who are still on the spectrum can often slide under the radar in the classroom, though their classmates may realize they have issues. It's often when they try to find work or in this case, romance, that the severity of their dysfunction becomes evident.

Cognitive behavior therapy can be very helpful to individuals who are on the upper end of the autism spectrum, if they will accept their need for it. Unfortunately, many do not, and blame their difficulties on others or "the system".

I think autism is not necessarily more common now, but is more diagnosed as people who once could have worked on the farm or in the home while being viewed as shy or quirky or a little odd now have fewer options in modern society. Working off-site via computer can be a Godsend to some of these individuals.

And while we're at it, further socially marginalize and alienate the awkward and socially inept among us. That should prevent any outbursts in the future.

Due to the hyperconnectiveness of society, people, unlike in the past, are made all too painfully aware of what makes them different and have their shortcomings and failures constantly thrown in their face.

"Weirdos" and "creeps" need affection too. Unfortunately there is no easy cure for this affliction that I can see.

Of course I wonder if I would feel so hypersexed if I wasn't bombarded with it at every turn.

Do these "incel" men need to learn that there are just as many "incelitas" as "incels"?

Is the problem that incel men want a woman they can't have and instead of finding the right woman, they whine about their life circumstances of not having a "hot, popular" woman with the brain of a dog to freely screw?

Doubtful. But since it's considered a "troll" community (think of the Russiabots here), hard to know what anyone is really thinking until they take their pathology offline.

A lot of these kinds of creeps started taking over a mental health/sociological usenet group in the early 2000's completely changing the character of the group.

I watched a news report yesterday about mysogenist websites and it seems that there are several sites, and that there's a tendency for members of those sites to rile each other up, and to normalize rape and violence against women. One of the points was that the internet has allowed people who think like that to find each other and to form a community, that oversight of the internet is too far behind the technology.

Yep. 25 years ago they would be still watching wrestling and playing with their Star Wars toys without the ability to find people going thru the same trials and tribulations, as these kinds of subjects rarely come up at the comic book conventions.

Of course with age and wisdom at these circumstances comes with the relief knowing you don't have to pay child support for 3 kids while going thru your second divorce.

The group in question was alt.support.shyness, a support group for people with certain personality disorders to say the least, which naturally leads to frustration with over inability to find companionship of the opposite sex. In the early 2000's a sub group of these kinds of posters started forming and began bullying other members and dominating the group, which, like most usenet groups, eventually died off.
