I've been watching Live PD for a few weeks and have noticed a couple of things that simply amaze me. Almost every time any cop on the show pulls over a car somehow they "claim" they smell dope and so deem they have Probable Cause to search. It's either that or they ask for permission and if denied they call out a K9 and direct them to search, even going as far as opening the doors and putting the K9 in the vehicle.
How is that not searching the car without warrant if they put the K9 police officerin the car?
The other thing that baffles me is how they have all the time with everything going on to stop everyone riding a bicycle for lack of lights at night or, just walking down the side of the street and demand ID and a search of their person "for their safety".
Anyone else think things are getting a tad out of hand when it comes to citizens rights?
Understand you're watching television. No doubt there are far more cases where there is no smell of weed, no drugs found, etc. Those cases aren't very interesting to watch though, so they're not aired.
It's like watching a highlight film of a basketball player & asking "How come this guy never misses a shot?". Because it's a highlight film. Thats's why.
What I feel infringes on the rights of those pulled over or stopped:
continued filming by LIVEPD when the person states they DO NOT WANT TO BE FILMED.
I guess somehow it's within a legal framework, as COPS has been doing it for years...
but still, if you end up innocent of any crime, the disclaimer on the show hardly makes up for the now-filmed contact with police.
Biking in the dark without a front light is illegal...therefore the stop by LE is appropriate.
I did notice last night the dog was put into the vehicle...perhaps LE could claim he alerted on the outside of the car first.....they will find a way to search no matter what...

I think they operate under the law that what you're doing is in public view and so you have no expectation of privacy. I do find it humorous that all these kind of shows put disclaimers at the start that say "all people filmed have not been found guilty and should be seen as innocent until proven guilty in a court of law". Yeah, that's going to happen.
As for the lights, one would presume that there are bigger things going on than pulling over somebody for bicycle lighting, as least I'd hope so.
Not much different though than everyone whipping out their cell phones and posting it to the 'net as soon as their little fingers can type...
It's a TV show; they aren't going to show the stops where they give them a verbal warning for rolling a stop sign, and let the go on about their night. That doesn't make good TV.

I usually like watching reality cop shows. But I get tired of all the little penny ante drug busts. Aren't there enough assaults, burglaries, domestic batteries, stolen cars, drunk drivers, etc., to keep the cops busy?
the 2nd scariest moment of my life, and I've had a few scary moments, was when a cop pulled us, 4 teens, over for speeding in the 1970s. we had a big joint sitting in the space between the dash and the front windshield rolled in bright yellow paper. we were on the way to a rolling stones concert and just threw it up there without thinking when we started our journey. the officer should have seen it. may have seen it. he didn't say a word if he did. he let all four of us go with a warning for speeding. at that time in texas one joint could have put all of us in jail for years. I've loved the cops ever since that day. even when they have given me subsequent speeding tickets.
