All this bill does is change the language in the official state statutes. Many years ago, my state changed the word 'workmens' compensation to workers' compensation in state law. I think most, if not all states, have done the same. It makes perfect sense to make these kinds of changes.
Okay, that makes sense. Thanks, Jazzarama.

True - otherwise they'll have a budget allowing them to steal less next year.
What is insanity is conservatives freaking out about these types of things. Does this ruin your life? Oh no! It’s firefighter now! The horror! The inhumanity! What is this world coming to when we use words like firefighter? Doomed, doomed I tell you.

And they say that the liberals are the snowflakes. Conservatives have to be the most easily offended people out there.
Since the fact is that there *are* women who work as firefighters and police officers, I don't understand why this is a problem. Most people I know have used these terms for years.
Of course.
Some people just try and use any excuse for complaining.

The words "fireman" and "policeman" could soon be scrubbed from all official state statutes.
The New York Assembly on Tuesday to approve a bill that would replace them with the preferred and gender-neutral “firefighter” and “police officer.”
It reminds me of college when the text book companies would change 100 words from edition #1 to edition #2 then proceeded to charge the students a billion dollars more for the latest edition (2).
I swear some of the professors were paid off too because they would demand that we get the latest version instead of saving a few bucks on the older version. To top it off they'd make those 100 changed words integral in the lesson plan to screw with anyone who didn't get the latest edition.
We already all know a fireman and a policeman indicate the profession...not the gender.

Good. I guess that means we’ll not have to count how many of each sex actually works as one. Do this with race too. Where will the sjw be then? Stop referring to men as men etc/white
Everyone I know has been using the phrases firefighter, police officer, mail person, for quite some time.
Do they really need to legislate this though?
Ditto for firefighter and police officer. Though I usually just say cop because it's shorter.
Do these people realize state statutes aren't medical documents, that if they leave the term policeman in there it's not going to cause a female officer actual harm? What a waste of the assembly's time.
Have you been living in a cave? The terms have been around for a long time.
