I'll say
.22lr doesn't hold enough powder to even tell if it was firing if you have ear protection on.
.223 doesn't have enough kick to even lift your sight off target.
One really doesn't even notice recoil until a mid charge round like a 6.5 Grendel and it is still pleasant to shoot. Around 8 to 10 lbs max.
Once you step up to a .270, .308 or 06 you can get loads that will get your attention, around 20 foot pounds. My .300 win mag with 180 grain Sierras with 74 grains of 4831 @ 3200 fps out of 24 inch barrel is getting at least 36 foot pounds of recoil. Not fun to shoot.
But, we haven't even got into shotgun recoil averages yet. The 3.5 12 gauge in a light pump and a 2 ounce load? Try 74 foot pounds of recoil. That amount of punch can actually hurt you if you aren't prepared for it. It's the equivalent of most of the largest dangerous game rifle rounds.
When we step up to the big stuff you can get a purple shoulder and this is why a lot of people use gas semi-autos. The semi-auto that everyone wants to ban. A .45 raptor shot through a bolt gun would hurt more than a .45-70 but through the AR10 platform it is not bad at all with the right buffer and a good muzzle brake.
