You are attributing a different goal to him than he actually has.
They are trying to investigate a series of crimes. They will keep working at it as long as they keep uncovering crimes.

I still can't help but wonder if Nunes flipped the moment he was shown his communications with the Russians.
His subsequent actions look like plots to fool Trump into believing he's on his side.

That's not true. It was targeted at the Trump campaign. Design to look at one side and ignore the other where crimes were obvious and allowed.

Read the other day that Texas was one of the states the Russians got into. The state has not told us their voting apparatus was hacked.
IMO, that is as big a problem as anything the Trump campaign did.
It was common knowledge Trump was mixed up in Russian money laundering since the arrest of the gambling ring in Trump Tower.
Manafort got the Republican platform changed. Must be why he was so eager to volunteer. But, Rick Perry always told Texans that nobody paid any attention to the platform, so why did Manafort bother?
